Super Sangean 909
 

I just received my "Super" Sangean 909 and it is great. My only
problem is that I live on a hill with the top being occupied with a
few local AM band transmitter antennas. They clobber the LW band but
beyond that all is well. I have been exploring the SW bands since I
was a wee lad and this radio with the RadioLabs mods is great. I
started out way back when on an old radio that my folks gave me, wish
I still had it. A Zenith Transoceanic. So much fun to hear the
world. Many more radios in between. Now I hear the world even
better. I would recommend to anyone who is contemplating an upper
range mid-priced receiver to give serious thought to this one. I
have not yet even hooked up an external antenna and have plenty of
contacts to explore and try to identify. Wife thinks I am nuts
listening to faint, scratchy signals, but that is okay, I just smile
and tweak the tuning dial a bit more.

Okay, question time. Has anyone here installed "Shotwave Log" and if
so how did it go, specifically on a Win XP machine?

so how did it go, specifically on a Win XP machine?

Since buying an unmodified Sangean 909 I've heard (and learned
firsthand) that it has poor SW sensitivity. Does the "Super" treatment
make a difference in that? Sounds like it maybe creates a concomitant
increase in overloading problems in a strong-signal environment.

Since I have never tried an un-modified one I really do not have a
direct comparison on the sensitivity increase. I do, however, know
that the sensitivity is very good on this one. As far as overloading
it is not a big problem although it is somewhat noticeable. The
modified filters (again no direct comparison) seem to work well on
shutting out adjacent stations.

Poor SW sensitivity in general or just poor off of the whip ??? I thought
that it was a good performer when used with an external.

Shortwave Log installed easily on my WIN XP computer. It requires
installation of a few extra files and runs great.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. I was a little hesitant due to all the
talk about the ".net" and other aspects that seemed like possible
trouble. Hard enough to keep these machines stable without adding to
the problem with software that might be risky.

My 909 works very well, thank you, as does it's twin dx 398. Both work a
bit better with a wire attached

My Super 909 has fantastic sensitivity right off the whip. Equal to a
2010 on SW and a whole lot better features.

The modifications must be effective. The 909, on it's whip antenna, is not
exactly deaf but rather hard of hearing. The filters are pretty poor. It
performs well on an external antenna though but, of course, this doesn't do
anything for the filters.
