9:1 Balun Testing

Is there a means of testing a 9:1 0r 10:1 balun to make sure
it is the proper impeadance?

Yes, there is, but it takes some special equipment. The best bet is to have the
proper toroid, wind it according to the formula and you shouldn't have any
problem.

Perhaps you could borrow one of the MFJ antenna analyzers from a ham

friend- terminate the balun in a 450 Ohm (9:1) or 510 Ohm (10:1) resistor
and tune across HF bands - you should see a low VSWR. Note that toroidal
transformers have quite a narrow bandwidth over which they are actually 9:1.
Binocular cores will increase this BW over 10X.
