DRUDGE REPORT . Com
EXCLUSIVE // Mon Sep 20 2004 11:58:02 ET SOURCE= http://www.drudgereport.com/ STATEMENT FROM DAN RATHER: Last week, amid increasing questions about the authenticity of documents used in support of a 60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY story about President Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard, CBS News vowed to re-examine the documents in question—and their source— vigorously. And we promised that we would let the American public know what this examination turned up, whatever the outcome. Now, after extensive additional interviews, I no longer have the confidence in these documents that would allow us to continue vouching for them journalistically. I find we have been misled on the key question of how our source for the documents came into possession of these papers. That, combined with some of the questions that have been raised in public and in the press, leads me to a point where—if I knew then what I know now—I would not have gone ahead with the story as it was aired, and I certainly would not have used the documents in question. But we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry. It was an error that was made, however, in good faith and in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism. Please know that nothing is more important to us than people's trust in our ability and our commitment to report fairly and truthfully. .. .. Statement from Dan Rather - Misled - Mistake - I Am Sorry { But NO Apology to President George "W" Bush } .. WHY WON'T DAN RATHER APOLOGIZE TO PRESIDENT BUSH AND HIS FAMILY ? .. WHY WON'T CBS NEWS APOLOGIZE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ? .. .. CBS Plans New Memos Statement NEW YORK, 20 SEPT 2004 http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/...in641481.shtml CBS HAS NOT REVEALED WHO PROVIDED THE DOCUMENTS OR HOW THEY WERE OBTAINED. WHO IS CBS PROTECTING ? WHAT - Did 60 Minutes Know ? {about the Forged Documents} WHEN - Did Dan Rather Know It ? {about these Fake Documents} HOW - Is 60 Minutes 'involvement' in/with these Forged Documents ? WHY - Has 60 Minutes Not Acted to Tell the Truth ? {about these Forged 'Fake' Documents} * According to The Washington Post, the network plans to say it was misled about the authenticity of the documents. * The New York Times reports that CBS News officials met Sunday evening with anchor Dan Rather, the reporter of the contested story, to discuss the network's next steps. * The Post and Times report that CBS' latest move comes after Rather met in Texas with Bill Burkett, a former Texas National Guard official who has been named as a possible source for the documents. * It was not clear if the network planned to apologize, the Post reported. ![]() "dxAce" wrote in message ... 'Fairly and truthfully'? I've been LMAO ever since I read the statement. dxAce From "the things you'll hear from Rather when 'hell freezes over'" department: "We at CBS admittedly felt the need, in the wake of the Swift Boat Vets controversy and speeches at the Republican National Convention, to quickly attempt to balance the tables before the election was lost by our guy. As a result, we seized on a specious story supported by questionable information because it was all we had at the time. My apologies to the President, and my assurance that the next time we go after him, it won't be so easy to detect our agenda." |
