They were new batteries, in use no more than a couple of weeks. One battery leaked--not the mineral stuff you would expect, but a caustic brown liquid--caustic enough to remove the silver finish from the battery compartment cover and the case in the vicinity. I've never seen anything like it. The RS salesman looked at the code on the battery carton and acknowledged that the batteries were recently sold. And, they are clearly marked Radio Shack batteries.
