Very sensitive off the whip. Good sound from the speaker.
Functional SSB. Pick it up cheaper as the discontinued Radio Shack DX-402
if available on eBay. I got two there for about $50 each, but that was a long time ago.
The Sony 7600GR is better except for the speaker sound.
If buying only one portable with SSB get the Sony.
If money is a concern you can save by getting a Degen (Kaito) 1102,
or Degen 1103, off eBay. Both have SSB and are great for the price
you pay. Reviews of the Degens and Sangean are here

I agree with Sanjaya. Used one for about two years. The $9.00 23 foot
"reel up" antennas you can buy is perfectly suited to it, for at-home
listening. Anything like a true longwire antenna will pretty much just
overload the front end, though. It's no longer made, I don't think, but
still widely available. If you can't find one for $50, you aren't
looking very hard.

.....

My brother bought a DX-402 when RS discontinued its own brand of SW
radios two years ago. For reference, here is a quote from a text file
from two years ago regarding the prices of discontinued RS radios:

These are the prices off the RS Computer as of 2 p.m. Central Time,
Oct. 29, 2002:

DX-396 is at $29.97 20-226 equivalent to unknown model Sangean
DX-397 is at $19.97 20-227 " Sangean SG-622
DX-398 is at $99.97 20-228 " Sangean ATS-909
DX-399 is at $39.97 20-229 " Sangean ATS-606 or Siemens RK-759
DX-402 is at $69.97* 20-230 " Sangean ATS-505

* As of late November, the DX-402 is $49.97.

I thought the tuning knob of the DX-402 felt cheesy, but that's
nothing contact cement couldn't fix. Here's a link to the RNW review:

I like my DX-402, and use it from time to time. Two nights ago, my DE1103
needed to be charged, so I listened to the 402 for a couple of hours. It is
less sensitive than my 1103, but it's a really nice radio for my listening
uses. I like its layout and everything.
