AOR LA 320 and LA 350 loops

Hi Frank,

I have the LA350 and it's an excellent antenna, especially if you live
in a noisy environment. If you search on "LA350" I'm sure you'll find
other posts in the archives.

The only drawback to the LA350 is its price. If you buy it along with
the optional MW and LW loop elements, you'll probably spend more for
it than you would for one of the popular Wellbrook loops. While I've
never used a Wellbrook and can't compare it to the LA350, what I read
makes me think that it's probably a superior antenna and a better
value for the money. It comes in both indoor and outdoor versions.

Another advantage of the Wellbrook loops is that they don't require
you to adjust any sort of preselector in step with your receiver. The
LA350 does require this and you might find it a pain in the behind.
There are also loop elements that you have to change from time to
time.

Well, Wellbrook also makes indoor loops. Perhaps someone can tell you
a bit about them? I myself would like to know how they compare to the
LA350.

RF environs. I only need to figure out how to get it into and between the
attic rafters and mount it on a small rotor.

Height is not that important to a small loop. It will pick up more long
distance signal and even less local noise the higher up it is placed so
like most any antenna higher is better. This antenna will work better
close to the ground over most types with the exception of an antennas
like a Beverage that is designed to work near ground.

I bought and have been using a Wellbrook ALA330S for the past few weeks.
Andy Ikin, the designer told me that noise pickup is least when mounted at
ground level. I have it in the attic now and it has really opened my eyes as
too the importance of signal to noise ratio. It does not provide the same
high signal levels I get from some other antennas, but it consistently
provides the cleanest, clearest signals...it always sounds best, even when
signal levels coming out of it are lower than other antennas. It is an
excellent antenna and a real "ear opener!"

Steve: I also use the LA 350 in my New York City apartment (Manhattan) -
a worst-case scenario SWL location! Like you, I find it superior to the
wires I've tried, which seem to deliver more noise than signal. At times
I'm amazed at what the loop captures;. Perhaps it's just propogation over
location, but the LA 350 seems to be very happy with my Drake SW8. Cheers.
