I loved Readers Digest as a child, and I loved WLS. What ever happened to
Larry Lujack from the 60s? He was the wild child DJ that pushed the limits of
the FCC's patience, and was fired and rehired a few times. I know this is off
topic, but I just had to ask. Inquiring minds blah, blah, blah.

Yeah. But nowadays you can hear WLS almost all the way to O'Hare Airport.

Yeah. But nowadays you can hear WLS almost all the way to O'Hare Airport.

I hear them good all day long here, and I'm about 100 miles from Chicago as the
crow flies. They come in good at night too.

Years back, they used to have a MUCH more powerful signal. It was pretty

WLS was weaker than stations from Milwaukee, Rockford, St. Louis and

WLS' antenna, and I can listen to 880 at night about half the time.
Ten miles from fifty kilowatts, one shouldn't be able to listen to a
station 10 KHz away without a very, very good radio, at least one
better than my nephew's $6 Radio Shack AM portable.

It's just as powerful here as it has been for the last 40+ years that I can remember
listening to them. Never a problem.

Yep. I live within a few miles of the airport, and the WLS signal is weak.
It's weak almost everywhere in the Chicago area! My guess is their antenna
isn't generating much of a ground wave anymore.

At least the situation is better than it was about five years ago, when
their transmitter would cut off from time to time, presumably because their
antenna then looked electrically like a rusty coat hanger.

Considering their signal, however, it wouldn't be unreasonable to think they
turned down power to save on fuses.

I've heard it said that WLS has serious grounding problems at their
antenna, and has been too cheap to repair them. That would explain
a lot.

By contrast, both at my old home and my new one WBBM can put THREE VOLTS
peak-to-peak into a loopstick antenna. WGN is over 2-1/2 VOLTS. Both
places are over ten miles from the respective antennas (which aren't
far from each other IIRC).
