Monitoring Times vs. Popular Communications?
A recent order from Grove Enterprises included a copy of the July, 2004
Monitoring Times. I have been a subscriber of Pop Com, since it used to be Popular Electronics, so how's that for aging oneself. Monitoring Times is impossible to get at any local store that sells magazines, in my midwest location. I must say that unless this edition of Monitoring Times was an exception, I liked it a lot more than Pop Com. I am interested in knowing what my fellow SWL's feel about The Monitoring Times, and is it worth the extra expense, when compared to Pop Com? Good DXing to you, Gary. |

Well, I'm biased but I certainly prefer MT! Seriously I think the shortwave section is very well organized and readable, and Glenn Hauser's shortwave news always very informative. (it's the first thing I read, even before my own columng!) The station profiles are always interesting, and the news items up front are well done and readable. It's difficult to keep anything specialized in the local stores, and since MT is the only magazine Grove publishes it's that much harder. I subscribe to both MT & Pop Comm although I like them for different things.
MT is more useful for the SWLer as a frequency guide but I really like the restoration articles in Pop Comm. I'm not (yet at least) into all the scanner stuff they both offer but I still read much of it to have an idea of what its all about. Since you asked specifically about SWLing, I would have to choose Monitoring Times. My general information for sw listening consists primarily of Monitoring Times, Passport To World Band Radio and Prime Time Shortwave. I tend to be a program listener rather than hard core DXer and these three sources generally provide the bulk of the info I need. Additionally I visit the websites of the major stations I listen to and print out their frequency listings...that's useful for, say, being able to find a listenable BBC signal at any hour of the day or night. Other listeners with different interests can recommend other sources of info for serious DXing, utility monitoring, listening to HAMS and stuff like that. Jay "Kachina 78" wrote in message ... Pop Comm has been, IMO a total waste for years. I subscribed to Pop Comm from the first issue to about 1997 or so, MT is better in every way, but the paper it's printed on maybe. Pop Comm never saw a radio they didn't give a good review to. BDK |

I subscribe to Monitoring Times, Popular Communications, Listening In and the Messenger. (In addition to the HAM magazines). If taxes keep increasing, and I have to make a choice, Monitoring Times will be the last to go. For my money it covers more subjects in more depth and the content tends to be more current. Dave |

You've got to hand it to Monitoring Times -- even though it's published by Grove, and you would expect a serious conflict of interest to slant their equipment reviews -- their equipment reviews remain very objective. I prefer to use MT's program guide over any other source, in particular, Passport. |
