Best Analog Receiver???

I am in the market for a receiver with the
following criteria:
1. Analog readout only
2. AM/FM/Shortwave freqs
3. About the size of a sony 7600gr or smaller
4. Power requirements: Four AA or less

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank You

There are many low cost (less than $50) digital readout receivers now.
It hardly pays to buy an analog model in this price range which will
almost certainly disappoint you.

In order of preference:
1) Degen 1103 (simulated analog display w/digital readout)
2) Sony ICF-SW40 (decent radio)
3) Sony ICF-SW11 (best of the low end - IMO)

If you change your mind about analog may I suggest the
Sony ICF-SW35. It is a Dual-Conversion receiver and the digital controls
are excellent. The audio is pretty nice and 3 AA batteries will last for
about 40 hours. Looks nice but most of all it is a Sony, IT WORKS!

I will be honest that I was about to say Hammarlund HQ-180A,
until I read the part about "AM/FM/Shortwave freqs".

Does a digital display cost more in battery-life than analog
to a significant degree?

(Presuming any back-lighting is on-demand and not constant)

It depends on whether the receiver uses a frequency synthesizer or PLL
(Phase Locked Loop) circuit for tuning, in addition to the digital
display, which most newer portables do. In that case you can expect the
power consumption to be significantly higher than a pure analog design.
However it's possible to design an analog receiver with a digital
display. The Grundig S-350 is a recent example of this type. It doesn't
have a PLL circuit for the tuning system but does have a digital
display, which is actually a frequency counter connected to the analog
tuning system. This design will generally use less power than a PLL type
but it's also less stable, which means it will drift off frequency. This
is not good for SSB reception.

Hi,
May I sugest the Grudig Mini-World100PE

It meets all the criteria, and isquite sensitive on its whip.
Battery life is exceptionally good and comes complete
with carry pouch, earbuds and even 2 AA batteries.
I bought mine from J & R Misic for under $30.00
including shipping. I undersyand Radioshack carries
this also,

I have the Grundig Mini also. It works
much better with 15 ft of thin wire attached
to the antenna. Batteries do last a very
long time. Use headphones for best sound.
It is about the size of a pack of cigarettes.
Hard to go wrong for $30.
