At 14 cents a foot, you can string up as much copper antenna wire as your heart's content, attach a $30 Balun transformer to the base, ground one side, and feed it with as much thin RG-58X coax as you need to reach your receiver(s). Don't be fooled into thinking you have to buy some commercial antenna to listen to SW, whether it be for program broadcast, military/utility or marine. Brent, Jacks right, a balun and a run of antenna wire, will get you some good
results. You could also try Par Electronics EF-SWL, which costs just a bit more than a good balun. It's set up, with insulators, ready to go right out of the box. You can even configure the transformers ground, at the feed point, which is equipped with two grounding terminals, and a shorting connection. All you need to do is try each of the grounding options, and see which one works best for reducing noise. I've got one up on the roof, and it works very well...nice and quiet. Bear in mind that I'm new to this SWL thing, so my questions can seem relatively naive. It appears that the EF-SWL is a long wire antenna. I think I read that it was about 45 feet long. You indicated that you have one on the roof. Can you describe how you have it set up? I have about a 35 foot wire in my attic with a cable downlead to my Satellit 800, and its kind of noisy. I would like to put one outside on the roof, but I would like to get some ideas on how to rig it up. Harlan "Kachina 78" wrote in message ...
