shogun, just remember you'll probably need an outboard speaker, as the stock
speaker's caustic, limited frequency range will cause listening fatigue with
extended exposure. Stock r.a.m. units are known to give indifferent
performance, also, causing the unit to hiccup with out-of-band frequency
readouts & dead reception. A suitable replacement r.a.m. board is still
available from Willco Electronics @ http://www.willcoele.com/

Like it's 15-20 year old contemporaries from Kenwood and Japan Radio,
the price for an R71a depends on condition and number of options.
Ebay is probably the best indicator of price.

Receivers described as being in very nice condition, little wear but
no options go for $275 to $350 depending on who's bidding. A fully
loaded R71a with all the optional filters, etc., in very nice
condition could hit $500.00 or a bit higher.

Forget that twenty-year-old "classic". It's an outdated radio demanding too
high of prices compared to today's cheaper electronics.

Get a new Icom R-75 from Gigaparts for under $500 and enjoy it rather than
waiting for the R-71's power supply to melt down or the RAM battery to go
bad.

The R-75 will allow you to pick up all the baby monitors in the
neighborhood, too.
Loads of fun.

Two weeks ago HRO had a special on R-75's delivered for $450. Keep your
ears to the ground for similar offers.
