Well, it *is* a bit different. Something that we'll need to get use to.
This is my FIRST post on this beta system. Seems OK. It also appears to
be posting messages much quicker. Well, we'll see how it works. Let's
see how long before this REPLY shows up on the google webrowser

John

johndobbs December 7th 04 06:44 AM

Wow!! Took ONE minute! That's lots better than the 5 to 9 hours! It's
rough playing with newsgroups when you're not at home and using other
equipment and can only post via the web. I like it!!

Thee's never been a delay posting from google. You post there, and it
leaves their system almost immediately. If you read messages there, however,
it won't appear until the next update or the one after. The updates are
every 4 hours.

Now, I don't see any difference in how fast or frequently the archive
gets updated.

Micahel

johndobbs December 7th 04 08:23 PM

Yeah....that's what I said...it would take HOURS before a posting would
post on the GOOGLE WEBROWSER. Now it takes MINUTES for a post to show
on the GOOGLE WEBROWSER. Before, the updates on the GOOGLE WEBROWSER
would sometimes take 5 to 9 hours. The 5 to 9 hours was also the
advisory that was posted on their site and I found that to be fairly
well true.

Before Google changed their system, if you posted a message through your ISP's news server, it could take 5-9 hours before it would show up in the Google Groups system.

So folks who read news groups through Google wouldn't see a message until it was several hours old.

Bruce Jensen December 7th 04 09:50 PM

I use Google Beta - it is dramatically faster, hundreds of times
faster, which is a great thing. One minor problem, maybe due to
traffic, is that on occasion, the new Google server indicates back to
the sender that an error has occurred, the message is undelivered - and
it gets delivered anyway. The downside is that the message gets posted
more than once *if you try again.* No big deal, except the poster
looks (and feels) like a dufus. Mea culpa, as it happens.
I can live with it.

Thanks for that info regarding the minor problems and glitches. Good to
know and will keep it in mind. Yeah, it's a breath of fresh air for
those of us that don't have access when away from home to a
newsreader-type reader.

I'm showing 4 hours old with no more recent updates. Don't seem to be
doing anything special here......

Yep, you're right! Both showed up over an hour after I tried posting
the one -- and then the same second one. Oh well...some glitches, but
still much better. I guess they'll iron the kinks out.

The post cancellations hardly ever work. Most servers ignore the
cancel command. Too many people were sending out forged cancels.

I count seven of your postings preceding this one.

You may well get the message to disappear on your own machine, but it
most likely won't go away from usenet.

I know that what mike says is true from direct experience. I have
tried to cancel his postings and it has not worked.

RHF December 8th 04 07:28 AM

FWIW:

The first time (within minutes) I tried the "Remove" [DELETE] Option
it did NOT work.

The second time (a ouple of Hours) I tried the "Remove" [DELETE] Option

it did work.

True...I use google quite a bit. I'm not too keen on the new format. I
prefer the

I like many of it's features, but it is way too buggy to run on it's
own. They should have run both systems in parallel. A couple of my
messages showed within minues of posting while others have not yet
shown after 7 hours.

the same way some people feel that placing an OT before a subject
heading makes it OK to off-topic post.

Take it to Google.

Don't forget the multiple postings.

People seem a tad clueless about this. Google has had this new
arrangement online for months, that's where the "beta" comes from.
That was the time and place to fix "bugs".
