Well, I took advantage of the bad weather to tweak
my impedance transformer again. This time I used
RG-174 for a Faraday Shield for the step down portion
of the 9:1, like what Joe Carr describes. I figured,
oh why not, and gave it a try. Haven't put the
modified transformer back into service yet, since
the snow is a morass of slush right now, but in a
day or two, I hope to try it out to see if there's
any difference in the noise floor.

Have you tinkered with a Faraday Shield, Steve??
