$500, huh? I don't know....$500 puts you within striking distance of
quite a number of receivers, both portable and tabletop--many of which
weren't made in China. I certainly wouldn't want an E1 from the first
production run! Better to wait until they get the kinks worked out, say
in 2008.

quite a number ?????

I can only think of one, the Palstar.

Take a look at Universal's prices on the Icom R75, Yaesu FRG-100B,
Palstar R30 and Satellit 800. All of these tabletops are available for
$600 or less. As far as portables are concerned, the humble yet
dependable Sangean ATS-909 is available for a mere $240. I don't know
what Universal is selling the Sony ICF-SW07 for, but I'm sure it's
less than $500 and the 07 will probably eat the E1 for breakfast on the
SW bands. There are other alternatives as well, both new and used.

So who's gonna be the first one to get one of these things? That's quite a
chunk of $$

Maybe I'm just a pessimist, but I have a bad feeling about the E1's
first production run. So, I wouldn't want to 'take the plunge' too
early in the game. On the other hand, unless lots of people start
buying this radio after its release, there won't be a second production
run.

In the photos I've seen, the radio looks fairly big and fairly heavy.
It's body appears to be all (or almost all) plastic, with lots of knobs
sticking out and a really large LCD screen--just waiting to get
scratched up.

Let's face it: A Grundig it AIN'T.

I'm not a big fan of the Satellit 800, but I bet it's still in
production long after the E1 has bitten the dust.
