"Coax-Seal" Sealant & "Stuf" for your Antenna's RF Connections [Weather Proofing]

"Coax-Seal" Sealant & "Stuf" for your Shortwave Listener
(SWL) Antenna's RF Connections [Weather Proofing]

MIKE,

It is Not good to use because it contains Chemicals that
can cause the 'mechanical' Electrical Connections to
"Corrode" {form an oxide} that will 'inhibit' the Electrical
Conductivity of the mechanical Electrical Connection.

However, If Silicon Sealer is 'all-you-got':

1. First wrap the 'mechanical' Electrical Connections
with Black Electrical Tape.

2. Second use a Brush to Paint-Smear the Silicon Sealer
all over the Electrical Tape and an Inch or two beyond.

THE BETTER IDEA IS TO USE "COAX-SEAL" SEALANT
The-Better-Way is to use "Coax Seal" as others have
recommended here.

TAKING THE EXTRA-STEP IS "STUF" {In-a-Tube}
STUF Dielectric "Water Proofing Filler" for Coax Connectors

- Stuf contains Teflon.
- Just fill the coax connector with STUF and tighten.
- STUF closely simulates this material used in Coax
Cable's Dielectric Properties, minimizing the initial
insertion signal losses while maintaining signal level
over time with the aging of the connection.

I have some 70 ohm cable that I plan to use for the lead in.

I also will use a 70 ohm to 300 ohm tv transformer as a balun.

Any recodmindations on what I should use to protect the
F connector on the TV Transformer?

I was told the house hold silicon sealer is not a good choice?

I never have liked vinyl tape. For wrapping electrical connections and
fittings,I always use good old fashion electricans friction tape.It also
last many years and does a good job of waterproofing too.

As a very active Antenna builder both as a Ham and SWL
I've tried many methods of sealing Antenna connections.

What works best for me is a product called Liquid Electrical
Tape (LET).
..
You just brush it on and when it dries it's permanently waterproof,
as in it won't eventually unwind like real electrical tape.

If you want to remove it it comes right off without leaving
all the goo behind like the putty type sealer does.
..
Here in the U.S. you can find this product at Wal Mart, Lowe's
and Home Depot.

Coax seal under a center-end-end-center wrap of 33+ is unbeatable.

however, what is that moldable tape stuff that you can put over and around the

Picked some up a while back at Menard's (local home-depot kind of store).
Gardner-Bender Silicone Fusion Tape, part # HTP-1010. Thinner than you
specify, though, but works a treat.

I used a pair of RCA ones with FM and my computer for quite a while.
They worked well so I would think they would work with SW.

ROBMURR January 25th 05 02:06 PM

Coax seal is the name.
