You can get a lifetime subscription to satellite radio, along with a
receiver, for less than the cost of many worthy HF receivers (and a
hell of a lot less static). The BBC is trying to tell you something.

Apparently English, Arabic, Spanish and Portuguese for South

America will be
reduced, if not more. I've not had time yet to peruse everything.

You can listen to BBC World Service in Detroit, Michigan, United
States on the following radio stations and frequencies:

SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO

XM SATELLITE RADIO

WUOM-FM 91.7

Two cost money to receive, and one begs for money twice a
year. Neither broadcast between 1.7-30 MHz.

I could also listen to them by flying to the UK, sitting in their
studio and listening to the announcer in person. And I'm about as
likely to do that as I am to subscribe to XM Satellite Radio.

I just looked at the Americas listings. Apparently programming
in English and Spanish for the Americas will be reduced to
morning and evening prime time, and the Portuguese service for
Brazil will be eliminated. I noticed that the alternate freq for
the English service to Central America (what most US citizens
listen to) will be moved up an hour so that 9525 will be on
between 0000 and 0300 and 6135 will be on 0300 to 0500 (right
now 9525 starts at 0100 and 6135 at 0400). 5975 will still be on
until 0500, but no mention was made of transmitter location
being changed, so if the site for 5975 is moved off Antigua
audibility in the US may suffer, although that's just
speculation on my part.

See
http://www.bbc.co.uk/portuguese/inst...dcasters.shtml
for the list of FM, Satellite and AM and, at the very end, current
short wave frequencies.
That's all going, but what are they doing with new transmitters in
Chile and elsewhere?
Delano, Greenville? Ascension? All have back signals that may be
heard in North America.
Portuguese still to lusophonic Africa.

I presume that China and evangels will move in to the missing
frequencies as they signed new deals with VT-Merlin for Meyerton
and Chile to South America.

Moot point; my receivers were paid for years ago,
and if I buy one, I can receive more than the BBC.
I also don't have to buy another license and equipment
if more than one person in the house wants to listen
at the same time.

The library, an mp3 player, a cd player, live365.com
and regular radio are enough for most musical tastes,
and I'm not a big fan of regular talk radio.

The BBC wants to tell me their viewpoint on the
world, just like anyone else does. I've learned after
many years to filter the news, because otherwise
I just raise by blood pressure. Is that a great tragedy?
No; there's too much that you hear that you can't do
anything about to make yourself worry about it.

Jim: Don't forget that BBC Webcasts for free also. Go to
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/

No static, no fading, no bull****. Just crystal clear audio. You
can listen to Radio 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 as well as World Service.

And people wonder why shortwave is dying!

Jim

mike0219116: Good luck listening to the BBC over the internet during
the next terrorist attack, or other similar crisis. The internet was
overwhelmed on 9/11. I got most of my news that day from the radio in
my office becuase the internet was useless.

If the US government wanted to, they could cut off certain websites or
audio/video feeds during and after the next crisis. In fact, they could
conceivably cut the US off from the rest of the internet, or put a heavy
filter on it like China does. The first thing that King Whatshisface of
Nepal did after reimposing dictatorial rule was to cut off the internet
feeds to his country. He also cut the phone lines. Most Americans that
I've talked to agree that martial law in the US is only a terrorist
attack away. In the event that happens, you will see how much the US
govt can control information. No more BBC WS on XM and Sirius for David.
No more foreign audio and video feeds over the internet. Most Americans
get their news from TV, which already just reports the Bush Admin's
talking points along with a smattering of "investigative" reports to
make it appear that they're independent. In the case that the US govt
really clamps down, shortwave will become really, really important. And
all ebay auctions for SW radios will mysteriously be pulled. Get yours
now while you still can. Americans really don't know what it's like to
live under absolute military dictatorship, especially that of Bush.
They'll soon find out.
