HJS,

Sony has already discontinued the Sony ICF-2010
and Sony ICF-SW77 Radios.

HamBone March 15th 05 05:07 PM

Very glad that I bought mine 18 mos ago from Gigaparts - I absolutely love
this radio. Now that it is being discoed, I don't think I will ever sell it.
Replaced an FRG100 with it and am very pleased with the performance right
out of the box. IMO, best shortwave out there for its price...

I just called Universal radio and they said they just ordered 250 and
they know NOTHING about it being discontinued.

[email protected] March 15th 05 05:44 PM

called grove enterprises and they know nothing aboutthe R75 or the R8B
being discontinued.

hard to believe two of the top SW receiver vendors in this country
can't keep a grip on two of their most important products !!!

Well, they certainly knew about the R8B yesterday, I know, because I actually
spoke to them. They said at the time that they had two left, and there were no
more to be had from Drake.

The order taker must not have a clue. Their wesbite is explicit:

"Availability Note:

discontinued. We are pleased to be able continue to offer this

Invader3K March 15th 05 06:09 PM

My question is...the R75 seems to still be a very popular receiver. Why
would they discontinue it at this point? It's not all that old even, is
it?

Someone earlier asked about the Yaesu FRG-100...I believe that one is
discontinued as well. Passport 2005 mentions that.

There is no indication at present on the Universal site of The FRG-100 being
discontinued.

I would like to hope that Icom will announce another high performing
receiver, but I think they are discontinuing it because of lack of
demand. Kenwood departed from the SWL market a decade ago after
producing one of the finest receivers ever to hit the amateur market -
the R5000.

If Taesu is gone (I don't know that) I guess this leaves AOR and Japan
Radio as makers of high performance shortwave receivers.

dxAce: There is no indication at present on the Universal site of The

mike0219116: For a short time last year, Universal did have it listed
as discontinued, only to have it show back up as available a few weeks
later.

PWBR has been saying that the FRG-100 was going to be discontinued for
several years, but this years edition says it's "for real" this time.

Yeah, if there was going to be another production run, then Universal
wouldn't have felt the need to stockpile them now. I'm afraid the R75
is history.

Steve

Universal seems to know ahead of time when something like this is going to
happen. They stockpiled the Drake SW2, SAT 800, and now the R75. I remember
when they closed out the SW2 for $400. That was a nice radio for the money.

Michael March 15th 05 11:22 PM

WTF is going on ??? First the R8b and now the R-75. Two of the most popular
and written about table tops are going up the spout. The question used to
be.... "Should I get a new R-75 or a used R8b ???" Soon, the question will
be... "What used table top should I get ???" Is the NRD-545 next ???

I hope ICOM makes a replacement for the R-75.

I see no reason why Icom would ax the R-75 unless they have something else
to offer in the future. This is a top notch communications receiver and it's
pretty cheap new. If it's totally true and the R-75 will actually be GONE
soon, it's a tragedy for SWLers.

The R-75 is the perfect DX'ing receiver for the money and fills a need for
us. There is a big difference in taking a $1500 radio off the market
compared to a rig costing under 5 bills. It affects more people and cuts
across a wider demographic.

It looks like the cheaper radio products from China are cutting into their
profits and is partly to blame for all this. Plus a decline in popularity
due to lowered brain activity among our populace.

Indeed.... I cant fathom that Icom would get out of the marker all together.
The amount and type of sw broadcasters will always change, but there will
ALWAYS be a market for a capable and affordable sw table top.

You've got a problem with that? You don't have a problem buying their
"aluminum telescoping poles". And later you said something about me calling
you a commie ******* if you bought one of their radios, but here in this
post...well, anyone can see for themselves what you have to say, which seems
