Default The New York Times Shortwave Article

This article may be online, but I can't find it. We have the Sunday New
York Times paper delivered to our home in Pittsburgh, and the following
article was found in the New York Times Style Magazine, in the Sunday,
March 20, 2005 edition on the final page. The article, entitled Shortwave
Radio Days by Paul Theroux, extols his experience with shortwave radios,
and the invaluable information that they have provided him over the years.

Once, having had his baggage stolen, he describes his effort to replace the
missing items, and his priority in first replacing the shortwave. The model
he owned was the Sony ICF-SW07. He says that he wouldn't take a serious
trip without it.

He concludes with the following: "When I travel, it's my only electronic
indulgence. A computer is a millstone, a pager is a joke and a cellphone to
me is a secular form of purgatory - merely a subtle, more nagging version
of the electronic ankle bracelets that perverts and felons have to wear.
But a shortwave radio is instant access to the wider world. It's
enlightenment, security and amusement."

Thanks to the New York Times for exposing the public to an issue that we
all find so interesting.

Here is the link, of course I found it only after I had made the original
post. Nevertheless, you can now read it all. (You may need to subscribe to
the online site, if so it is free)

Regards.

....Sangean 606A & Sony AN-LP!;....

What a great little radio. I bought its RS equivalent, the DX-399, when
RS lost its mind and dumped SWRs a few years back.

Saw your references to, but not the article itself. I can relate to
the guy having said he takes his radio with him. If I'm going on any
serious sojourn, it's one of the first things I think of having with
me. Darren http://www.geocities.com/apocalyptic121/index.html
