do with it.Long Live American Capitalism! cuhulin |
There is a fool born every minute.Yesterday afternoon,at the Goodwill
thrift store,I bought an old Zenith portable (portables, fore runners of the laptops) computer for $5.00 and an Intergraph for $2.50.Both items have little bitty brass plates on them that say,Mississippi State Highway Department.I know I will never use those two items, but what the hell,I bought them anyway and I bought a few books too.Windows 98 and Windows 95 and a HP book about computer scanners and a book about the Canadian Royal Mounted Police. cuhulin |
They should give me that money and let me spend it.

Sometimes just the fact that you have an unusual item that's hard to find and shows us a bit of technical history is enough to make it yours. Like an very old coin. Hold it in your hands, and you can try to imagine all the places the coin has been and all the people who owned it. Lucky |
Why concern yourself with how others spend their money ?

Wow... that was my first ever digital receiver. I traded it a long time
ago, but I managed to find another one - on ebay - for about 70 bucks with shipping. I still have that one now, but if I could get THAT much for it, hell, maybe I'll put mine up! |

He evidently thinks (knows) the RadioShack Realistic DX-400 will give him the Tunes and Sound that He Enjoys. . jm2cw ~ RHF . . Yeah I guess so. I never heard one so I can't say myself. FM listeners don't really care about SW and SSB. Actually, I was looking to buy one of these radios myself if I saw one in very good condition. I wanted one in my collection since it was supposedly the only triple conversion port out there. They were going for $40-$60 but many didn't look to good. I didn't want to pay more then say $50 for one. I did some research on the radio and the keyboard entry goes bad after a while. There is no manual knob for tuning so you're stuck with the keyboard. Even if you know how to fix radios, the keyboard is "welded" down with plastic tabs to the radio's body. So, it can only be removed and installed a few times. The closer you live to the ocean, the faster the keyboard goes bad over time. The radio is pretty old so you want one in well kept in good condition. I think the triple conversion factor is the reason it's sought after so much. Wonder how much difference it really makes and can you hear it with a portable??? But for $162, and if he likes FM, I think he could have done better but to each his own I say! Lucky |

Here is the telling line that describes why you chose to rant about this to begin with: "I wanted one in my collection...". So essentially you were just ****ed because the price went high? If you are indeed so well off, as you alluded to in an earlier post, then money should be no object to you... correct? dxAce Michigan USA |
Why is that any different than someone paying $500.00 for an Icom R71a,
$900.00 for a Sony 6800W Orange dial, or $3,000 and a Panasonic RF9000. Ebay is about as close as we will come to a perfect market, or one that reflects the true market value for an item. Someone wanted the radio more than you did and was willing to use his wallet rather than his mouth. Lucky wrote: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW Lucky |
I do own a Panasonic Model No.RF-2600 radio which I bought brand new at
a Service Merchandise store that used to be on I-55 Frontage Road about twenty something years ago.I am not saying it is a great radio but it still works ok.I am not too sure if I want to sell it,but I might,it all depends on how much money someone makes an off to me for the radio.I don't remember exactly how much money I paid for the radio,I think it was somewhere between $160.00 to $180.00. cuhulin |

A perfect or close to perfect market is one where all sellers can offer
their item(s) and bidders can offer to purchase while having access to information about prior and current sales activity. On ebay there is a wealth of information about what is being offered, what prices items are selling at and what prices do not attract buyers. Are there scams - sure, but they are a small small part of the action. A perfect or close to perfect market is not one where you get your idea of the lowest price. The only guaranty for the buyer is that if you want a certain item you have to be willing to top the last bidders price. The only guaranty for the seller is that your good will sell if it is priced to attract buyers and buyers are looking. A perfect market doesn't guarantee that some participants will make dumb decisions. Think of the market as an opportunity that can be taken or forgone - it's your choice. |

Maybe, but you will notice when people bid on radios like the R-75, Drake R8 a and b, Harris rigs, you find they go for close to real market prices. That's because those buyers are smarter and more informed customers. That's a real market demonstration. But you'll notice the "less serious" or more frivolous the item is, the dumber and less informed the buyers are. These are the idiots that make Ebay a great place to unload. So, just because some bumpkin is willing to pay 4 times what it's really worth, that does not make it worth that much. I bet ya after he uses the radio for 2 weeks, he'll wonder why the hell he paid $162 for it. Lucky |

the VALUE, NO NO NO it changes the PRICE, not the VALUE price is NOT value repeat everyone PRICE IS NOT VALUE property in california sells for a price, not a value. only an idiot would say a one room 25 year old apartment in a fair part of town is worth $350,000 !!!!! |

That, by definition, makes it *exactly* worth that much to the person who paid that much! Just because *you* wouldn't pay that much does not make it *not* worth that much, either! Why do you believe that *you* have some special power to set prices that everyone must pay? I bet ya after he uses the radio for 2 weeks, he'll wonder why the hell he paid $162 for it. OTOH, he may never use it, and put it on the shelf with the rest of his collection. Indeed. Collectors have different motives than users when buying an item.
