Two words: budget cuts. Across the board. DW and RN have the same
problem, as do most of the small European broadcasters, which are
shutting down SW operations entirely to save money. State funded
broadcasting in Europe is in big financial trouble as the governments
struggle to stay solvent and within EU budget specifications, which
require that budget deficits be no more than 3% of the budget. It's not
just the BBC, it's everybody.

I subscribe to DirecTV (as in,I pay about $44.00 each month for that
nonsense) and BBC America (Yes,I know,I know,I knew before anybody ever
said it in rec.radio.shortwave news group,so please spare me the same
old refrain) is one of the tb (tb,Dennis the Menance,tb) that BBC
America is not the same as BBC on Shortwave Radio. However! I know what
that BBC America woman on BBC America tb news "needs" :{)

Correct observations. The re-structuring will affect both the
World (external) and Domestic (internal) operations of the BBC.
Both the people who watch and/or listen to the BBC are not
happy and feel that these actions by Management will dilute their
historic coverage of the news and programming as a whole.

The 2,050 job cuts - including 424 announced in
December - take total job losses at the BBC
to 3,780, saving £355m ($682 USD) a year.
The combined cuts amount to 19 percent of the
BBC work force.

In an unrelated story, on 26 March (yesterday) BBC has
brought back it's long successful SciFi program series
DR. WHO. (currently only available in the UK)

The opening episode of the first full series since
1989 saw the Time Lord - played by Christopher
Eccleston - meet his assistant Rose (Billie Piper).

Written by Russell T Davies, it is the first of 13 new
episodes of the drama, which was first screened in 1963.

"We're pleased so many people sat down as a
family to watch the return of the Doctor," a BBC
spokesperson said.

Unofficial overnight figures show the programme got
an average of 9.9 million viewers - 43.2% of all viewers -
with a peak of 10.5 million viewers, a 44.3% share of the audience.
