Look! Up In the Sky! ....It's Radio Shack's Second Coming!
900+ Radio Shack stores in Canada will have to change their name by the
end of June to "The Source by Circuit City." Mike Kowal, an exec VP at Radio Shack (USA) arrived in Toronto yesterday to scout new locations for new Radio Shacks across the country. He said, "Our goal is to be in some key cities in a key number of locations by this Christmas...Our goal is to be aggressive this year, and to have stores and re-establish our presence within the country." He said, "Radio Shack is determined to remain the dominant small-store electronics specialty chain in Canada. The new stores will have an updated and brighter look." source: The Toronto Globe and Mail, Friday, Apr 29, 2005, page B5. |

Looks like RS Canada stores as were have been bought by Circuit City. Tandy corporate told them they have to change the name of those stores because Tandy's bringing their own stores in and retains the rights to the name Radio Shack... |

IMHO - The 'good news' would be...
"The Source by Circuit City" comes to the USA :o) ~ RHF . . . . . |

@l41g2000cwc.googlegroups.com: IMHO - The 'good news' would be... "The Source by Circuit City" comes to the USA :o) ~ RHF . . . . . Don't get me wrong, Radio Shack/The Source up here is not like the old days when I was a kid, when an entire 30 foot wall was parts. Now, it's only half the wall, and they sell satelite dishes instead of TV antennas (although the latter is orderable to a store). Resistors, transistors, capacitors, rectifers are available, but mostly the common types. However, they do have every connector imaginable for 75 ohm and 50 ohm coax, along with many adapters to go between types, which was invaluable in my shortwave radio buying spree of the last year. Of course they have cellphones, but not excessively. I think about 6-8 feet of wall space is devoted to cellphones. The same company also owns a chain of stores that specialize in cell phones, so I don't think they want to overdo the cell phones in radio shack, er, I mean The Source. One other thing that has changed in the last 5 years is no scanners. Comparing the US and Canadian "Radio Shack" websites, the US one only carries the cash-cow Grundig crank radios for shortwave (which I understand are very high margin items and are actually quite popular for camping), whereas the Canadian one carries those (of course, they are money makers) as well as the much maligned S350, the Satellit 800, the YB-400PE, and a few other assorted types. |
