I've owned both a FRG7 and a Drake R8B and they are in a different class
altogether.

These are 'value for money' reviews, not objective performance reviews. See
the Sangean ATS808 outvalues both with a 5 average rating but we know that
it would be far below the R8B in performance. Since anybody can submit a
review, the whole rating system is suspect but one would hope that the more
reviews submitted the closer the average will reflect popular opinion.
Comparing these average 'value ratings' for receivers in the same price
class might be significant but, even then, a spread of 0.2 (4.8 vs 4.6) is
not, even with a very large number of reviews. There are only around 20 for
each.

Many of these are not "expert" opinions nor are they based on absolute
performance. A lot has to do with the price of the radio for the
performance (bang for the buck), and in general how happy these people are
with their radio in the real world. I find these reviews valuable, but you
have to understand what they are.

actually I get my best opinions from ebay. :)

the sellers there tell me how rare a radio is and how well it compares to
radios they are not selling

As with any review eham reviews present the opinion of the writer. I
find eham reviews useful with the understanding that not all owners
have the same technical experience.

Still, no harm buying one and comparing. I need a decent analog to compare
to the R75 and the SW8. Never owned a frog.

I owned the FRG-7 sold under the Sears name. It was a decent receiver,
and a reasonably good performer in it's day. Because it's design is
dated, tuning around is more complicated than it should be, the
receiver has only 1 filter of average selectivity, etc.

The ongoing hype surrounding the FRG-7 inflates it's image beyond it's
capabilities and as a consequence it is usually overpriced on Ebay.
