I hate snow, and we plan to move someplace warmer,
where if I want to see snow I will have to take a
plane, but FL is OUT!

Maybe Michael A. Terrellis correct about the lightning
down there. It looks like they have major events nearly
every day. And the purple areound what I think to be Tampa,
Gulf caost, bay about half way up,is beyond wierd.
I wouldn't want to even visit there.

Why exclude Florida as a location because of the storms. Washington,
DC is known for it's summer thunderstorms and I used several table tops
and portables there for years. No problems, although I do unplug power
and antenna when the nasty storms roll through. Never had a problem.

If you are concerned about local conditons damaging your receiver
consider that: In the midwest it will probably be blown into another
county by a tornado, on the west coast it will be shaken to death by
earthquakes, in Texas it will be baked to death in the sun, in south
atlantic states it will be flooded in a hurricane, in northern states
it will be buried in snow and fried with winter lighning and in the
north atlantic states is will be drowned in a northeaster.

An advantage the coastal areas of Florida have for SWL is excellent soil
conductivity.

If you're on a bay or a beach, you'll probably find water if you dig a hole to
plant a shrub or a small tree.

I tend to do my listening down there outside with a "portable" 3 meter whip.
The reception compares nicely with what I get in CT on a 65 foot random wire.

I imagine the biggest problem with putting in an effective ground system would
be maintaining it because the soil is so wet.

Most of the thunder storms happen in July and August, when just about every
afternoon ends with a 5-10 minute storm.

We get storms here off Miami but I haven't seen loads of lightning. They are
usually far off over the ocean.
I have seen a few bad nights but I just unplugged my outside antennas and
went with an indoor whip or loop.
No biggie. It's beautiful down here. Nice clean air, loads of water,
girls..oh the girls.....There are always tradeoffs in life. But not living
in paradise because of lightning doesn't make sense to me.

They just did a news story about lightning striking a house in Lake
Mary, Fl. It blew out all their electrical circuits and set the house
on fire. It looks like its going to be a total loss.
