Another delay on the Eton E1?

According to Universal Radio's website, the Eton E1 (you know, the one
we used to refer to as the Satellit 900) is now due out in late July.
In any case, ad space for this unit is now being taken out in mags.
Saw a half-page Eton ad in the latest Atlantic Monthly (with half of
the ad space going to the E1).

The endless delays on this radio would concern me. I can't help but
wonder if there is something that manufacturing just hasn't been able
to figure out on the E1.

With radio stores now taking orders and ads running, this has got to be
putting incredible pressure on manufacturing to deliver the radio.
This can lead to short cuts and a "just ship it" mentality.

Not saying this is happening here...but if you have ever worked in a
company where Marketing makes big promises to the world without
bothering to check with R&D or Manufacturing to see if it is practical
or possible - then you have a recipe for customer disappointment.

Eton/Lextronics had a rocky rollout of the Sat. 800 with lots of QC
problems entering the market. Early customers of the E1 are either
going to wind up the beneficiaries of them taking their time to "get it
right" or they will be beta-testers.

I wonder what the real story is on the E1.....anyone know?

Yeah, I don't see the point of sinking that much money into a portable
anyway. For a little more you could get one of the small Palstar
tabletops. The E1 will get you portable performance at a tabletop
price.

If it works as wll as the S-800 on MW/HF it is certainly more of a
listener's radio than a Palstar.

There are cheaper "listerner's radios" than the E1. The S-800 is a good
example. It's significantly cheaper than the E1, as are others.

And one could always buy the Palstar and spend a litte extra on an
external speaker. If you're gonna spend tabletop dollars, at least get
tabletop performance.

Is anybody here willing to spend $500 to be a beta tester for Eton? :)

Remember that Eton didn't have to do any development for the Sat800. It's
just a repackaged Drake SW8. I don't know what the E1 started from.
