New radio

Picked up a nice r-392 today. And to think some folks think you can't gain anything from drinking beer other than a beer gut. I paid for it with money from recycling the cans from the beer that I drink when I hang out in the garage. Love dem bones! ----------------------------------------------- You must either have saved cans for a long time, drink one hell of a lot of beer, or found a R392 for a very good price. My first good SW was a R392. A great "portable" radio. Might have been why I have a hernia. I loved mine so much that instead of selling it, I loaned it to a friend with survialist outlook. It is a very good receiver. Somewhere on the web I found a link to a series of solid state modifications that looked interested. If I recall correctly it needs ~24V @3.9A. I ran mine from a split supply. Heaters +26.5V and the B+ at 30.00V. I used a LM317, with a 2N3055 for current boaster, and a slow power on supply that took ~60S to go from 1.2V to 26.5V. I ran the receiver from 1972 through 1984? and never lost a tube/valve from failed heater. The split supply kept the drift to something like ~50Hz an hour and removed the very minor freqeuncy jump when teh crystal oven heaters cycled. The only serious defect is the lack of a product detector. The only receiver that I have ever had that was quiter was the R390. I would strongly suggest replacing the audio output tube with a solid state replacement as it draws about half the heater current and makes the radio run much warmer. In a pinch you can couple the grids to the plates with decent caps for headphone use. The only thing I don't miss is the joy of lugging it to a camp site. Great way to stay in shape. And of course the digital tuning can get tedious. Crank crank crank... Terry |

I paid 200 dollars for one with a power supply. Which according to ebay pricing is a pretty good deal. I've been wanting to get one and was going to wait until the hamfest at shelby but went ahead and picked this one up. I've done a good bit of research on the 392 and have mods in mind that I would like to accomplish. Is there a commercially available solidstae replacement or is that a homebrew project? My next rig will be a 390. Maybe that is what I will look for at Shelby. I like those old boatanchors. Lucily I have a place to put them and they won't get moved around too much. If I turn on 3 or 4 at once during the winter I can turn off the heat too. Tracy -------------------------------- I don't know if anyone offers one. You might check "Fair Radio Sales", in Lima OH, they have listed the mil-spec modules from time to time. I only heard one once, and it sounded "gritty" to me, but it was at a ham field day, and it was used with the mil-spec phenolic speaker, so the speaker may have been the problem. I have been tempted a time or two to mod mine, but my friend listens to "hate filled" radio (RHC) and I really don't have the time to add yet another project to my overfilled list.... This is the only link Ihave that still works. I may have some on a backup image, it will be this weekend at the earliest before I can restor them and see what is there. http://www.roveroresearch.com/r392/hints.html (the mosfet idea looks real interesting) Terry |
Greetings! A good friend of mine now a silent key had one and offered
it to me to take home. He said he didn't use it anyway. Sure enough he died and it is to my knowledge still sitting in his storage building. His wife has no interest in his radio stuff yet can't seem to part with anything. She has asked me to help her sell his stuff a time or two, but always changes her mind. You ask why didn't I take it home? I didn't have a power supply for it. I may still get a hold of it one day. I was very impressed with it, but I love a big radio. Great find! Have a great week! Jon. |
Wouldn't you actually have more money to buy an even better radio if
you stopped drinking beer altogether? As far as I can tell, beer costs more than 4 cents (5 if you don't live in California). |
Hey! Don't insult my Kaito KA-1101! It works well (but not as well as
my ATS-909). |

Yeah...ain't it nice? I'm even going to drink more beer and get a r-390
and sp-600. Just shows you what you can do when you drink lots of beer. |
No insult intended...I just don't really care for them. I like the
sangean's though. |
Eric you might want to try cleaning house at the shack there. It looks
like you have that table overloaded just a might not to mention the electrical system in your shack. |
Greetings Tracy! It may be a dumb question but what is a switcher? I
have never heard the term before. I am familiar with Fair Radio Sales. Never bought anything from them before. Thanks for the answer in advance! Have a great weekend! Jon. |
Jon,
In addition, switching power supplies can be rather noisey and interfere with radio reception but they are more efficient than linear supplies. The original supplies were linear power supplies. Linear power supplies are somewhat wasteful but they work well in the radio environment. While being large and heavy, I would still like to get an original supply for this radio along with the transmitter. I did find a complete setup for 900 dollars in Tampa but I don't have the time to go get it right now. Tracy |

Jon, In addition, switching power supplies can be rather noisey and interfere with radio reception but they are more efficient than linear Well designed and built switching power supplies can be as quiet as the better linear power supplies, and quieter than the cheap ones. I might be willing to meet you half way when you admit that you started this fight by saying that I had sex with my sister. Do I need to repost that? Let me save you the trouble. Here it is. I never mentioned sex. Your fevered imagination, combined with what appears to be poor reading comprehension, did. As the rest of us know, the best reason to go the wood shed is to get wood. Your sister may have had a tough time carrying in the wood because of the weight. She may have had a tough time chopping the wood and needed help with that. She may well have needed an opinion as to how long the existing wood stockpile would last before more sawing and splitting was in order. She may have well wanted to know the BTU content of pine compared to maple. She could easily do that, as she's always been smarter than you and much more aware of the world she lives in. Now, given these very valid reasons to be called to the wood shed, I find it very telling that you automatically thought of *SEX* as the first option. You are obviously one sick puppy. Your own sister...shame...you make decent human beings everywhere throw up.(*) (*) Good taste not applicable in Mississippi, Georgia and elsewhere where prohibited by law. ================================================ ================================================ -------- Original Message -------- Path: clgrps11!newsfeed.telusplanet.net!newsfeed2.telusp lanet.net!newsfeed.telus.net!edtnps90.POSTED!53ab2 750!not-for-mail From: m II User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050501 MIME-Version: 1.0 Newsgroups: rec.radio.shortwave Subject: Lotta QRM on this forum References: . com 9fJse.50774$wr.17052@clgrps12 XP5te.68693$on1.66257@clgrps13 In-Reply-To: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Lines: 13 Message-ID: l6ete.80991$tt5.6376@edtnps90 Date: Sun, 19 Jun 2005 13:07:29 GMT NNTP-Posting-Host: 198.53.255.9 X-Trace: edtnps90 1119186449 198.53.255.9 (Sun, 19 Jun 2005 07:07:29 MDT) NNTP-Posting-Date: Sun, 19 Jun 2005 07:07:29 MDT Xref: news.telusplanet.net rec.radio.shortwave:436168 peebarrel wrote: ...inconsequential hillbilly nonsense... That's where the good stuff is Mike! All those old folks go down there, retire and take the good stuff with them. It was a nice setup the guy had. It was all original with the P/S, transmitter, and receiver. It just needed the antenna. You are pretty close to Tampa aren't you? Tracy Closer to Ocala, and "The Villages" where thousands of retirees move in every year. Let me know if you're ever down here and maybe we can meet to say hello. I am getting used computers from some of them for my "Computers for Veterans" project. I collect and repair, then give away computers to disabled Veterans, and Veterans who are down on their luck. There is a link on the right side of the "Organization" line of this message header that will take you to the website I have started building. It explains more of what I'm trying to do. A brief mention was made in the "Community Bulletin Board" in the local paper last week. I'll bet that is a full time job! I probably have no telling what up in the attic. I'm afraid to throw it out thinking that I will probably need it one day. I might just ship it all to you. Is there anything that you need off hand? It is, when you can only work a couple hours a day! I can always use 1 GB or larger hard drives, memory and modems. I get plenty of monitors and printers, even though most of the printers are missing the ink cartridges so its a real pain to test them. I asked for empty cartridges that I could refill on the Ocala Freecycle group, and was asked to unsubscribe because they don't believe anyone would repair and give away computers. We are going down to Treasure Island or Maderia sometime in July. I know that is still quite a bit north of you is it not? Most people around here head to Destin or PC to vacation at the beach but I like going south of Tampa for smaller crowds. Tracy If you take I-75 to Tampa you pass a couple miles from my place in Ocala. I'm about 10 miles from either the Hwy 200 or Hwy 484 exits. I haven't been to Destin, since I built Ch 58 in the early '90s. I drove up I-75, across I-10 and I think it was Hwy 301 down to Hwy 98 to the east of Sandestin. -- Former professional electron wrangler. Michael A. Terrell Central Florida |
