Headsets?

Can someone suggest reasonably-priced comfortable headsets that are
excellent at isolating the user from _loud_ room noise? Something I can use
for shortwave and with enough frequency response to enjoy my XM radio.

TIA

If you don't want to go with good in-ears, something like a Sennheiser
HD280 or HD25-SP looks like the best bet. HD212s also have very good
isolation, but beware of their BASS. HD202s also are quite good. HD201s
reportedly have only average isolation (similar to a Beyer DT231), but
they do sound excellent for the price. (If you're still listening to
cheap crummy old cans, now's a good time to upgrade.) Some of AKG's
closed cans may also be worth checking out, e.g. the K171 or K271S. The
guys at Headroom have measurements up for quite a few of the headphones
they're selling:

If you need really insane isolation, there are several IEMs that provide
it, Etymotics come to mind here. I bet you could search for "good
isolation" (or similar) at Head-Fi and be buried in threads, so I'll
suggest you do that.

BTW, you may no longer find the XM sound quality all too amazing once
you've got good cans. Compression tends to be pretty heavy there.
