Sony 6800w dismantling
 

How do I dissamble this unit? I was able to remove the back panel, and I
have removed the screws from the bottom of the unit.
What I need to do is clean the frequency range switches. The PLL has some
unlock problems, and the only way I can get at them is to take the unit out
of the case. Also, does anybody on this group have any kind of service info
that they can scan and e-mail to me? I would be glad to pay for the effort.

1) You're on the wrong track taking the bottom screws out. Put them back
in.
2) There are six screws holding the front panel on. You'll need a long
Philips screwdriver, 8" or more shaft, preferably with magnetic tip to pull
the screws out. Without the service manual, you might be able to figure out
which ones they are (two are inside the battery compartment lid, but the
others are harder to get to.)
3) Buy the service manual for $19.95 at www.manualzone.com/. If you own
this radio, you should have one.

This is a very service-hostile radio. If you do go through the trouble to
take the front panel off, use that time to replace all of the bulbs.

I already checked that website.............it appears they only take PayPal,
so that option is out. I get so many fraudelant e-mails from PayPal
informing me about suspicious activity on my account. I don't have a PayPal
account, so I will let it rest there.
The only other source is A.G. Tannenbaum, but they don't seem to answer
their phones.
Any other sources? Also, I did see those screws for the front panel, but I
need to remove the whole assembly so I can work on the synthesizer.
It seems that the LO output from the VFO droops at the high end of the
tuning range. When I tune up above "800" on the mechanical dial, the
synthesizer goes out of lock. This is on all bands, when they kind of work.
I believe that this synthesizer is a dual-loop hybrid vernier synthesizer. I
just need to find out where the sampling point for the VFO is.
I do have a long Phillips head screwdriver, so I will pull it apart today.
Hopefully, the top of the unit separates from the bottom; that is all I need
to pull off.

I did manage to get five of the screws out, but there is a hidden screw on
the right side of the front panel. The back panel has an illustration
depicting that the screw is just above the front end module, but it appears
to be hidden. Does anybody have any ideas?

On some kinds of thingys,there are decals (I have run into them
before,believe you me) that cover some screw heads.

Nordmende Globetrotter that I just got through repairing!

Of course not! Especially when I see that somebody from Nigeria and somebody
else from Bosnia is using my "supposed" account.
I guess they gave up on sending those "Greetings, I am Doctor Blah Blah
Blah" things that offer to let me launder their 5 million dollar
inheritance, if I will only give them my bank account number, routing
number, etc.
It looks like I lost out on that one. I better move much faster next time I
get one of those e-mails. What a good deal! The quick and easy way to file
bankruptcy. But wait................there's more!

It looks like I will need a service manual for this radio. I cleaned the
switches and it does work better, but the PLL is still in need of
adjustment.
On the ranges below 5MHz, the system goes out of lock most of the time. Same
thing when you tune above "900" on the tuning dial. I would surmise that
there is probably a VCO coil that needs adjustment, and that right now, the
system is set at the edge of its capture range. I'll let you folks know what
the problem is once I finish with the repair.
Oh, I found out the reason that I couldn't find that final
screw...........the documentation indicated that this screw was at a point
in the chassis that was 3 inches higher than it really was!

I figured out the problem with the radio. I needed to clean the 1MHz tuning
ranges. The interesting thing is that these ranges are not controlled by a
switch, but by an indexing mechanism that tunes a miniature multi-gang
tuning capacitor in what appears to be a form of the Wadley Loop system that
the Yaesu FRG-100 uses.
This is a form of a hybrid synthesizer that uses a 1MHz comb generator as
the reference. When you are changing the 1MHz tuning steps, you are
essentially tuning a free-running oscillator. When you tune this oscillator
to within the capture range of the PLL, this oscillator locks on to one of
the harmonics of the 1MHz comb generator.
I still need to figure out why the system goes out of lock at the extreme
upper end of the VFO tuning range, but I think that the amplitude of the VFO
is starting to droop at this end.
I think that the RF output trimmer and padder need to peaked while watching
the output on an RF Voltmeter.
A piece of cake....................I just don't know how big of a piece of
cake it will be!
