What, no SAT 800?


So, I have a sense of quality and features etc. But, I'm not a super pro
like some of the other guys in here that have been doing this for years.

No Dewayne unfortunately. I heard to much about the terrible quality control
and wobbly knobs that come off and all sorts of other things. So, I didn't
want to take a chance on buying one off Ebay and bought the R75 with the
last $500 allocated for a radio. Perhaps one day I'll buy a brand new one
from Universal.

Right now I need to be a little tight with my money.

We're lucky to have Lucky on RRS! Thanks to him we now have a good idea of
what the Satellit 900 --err, E1-- is all about. And thanks also to him for
the pointer to the manual.

From what I can tell from the specs, this is a repackaged Satellit 800
sans the ugliness and empty air. The addition of PBS is useful for SSB.
For AM one simply off-tunes while in SAM mode. I suspect the detector
circuitry is essentially what's in my Drake SW2, so a shift of up to
50-60% of the width of the chosen filter would be possible.

With my Satellit 700 developing a buzz after a few minutes operation, and
with my having to do some repair work on my ancient 2010, the E1 is
looking like the perfect bedside/rooftop radio. Can't wait 'til J&R gets
their shipment!

Like Lucky, I have a thing for radios. In addition to the above units, I
also have the 525, R30 (each feeding a speaker through an SE3 and FL3),
HF150, SPR-4, Sony 5900 & 7600, and Pete's MW receiver as soon as it's
released. Clearly I desperately need another radio!

Ultimately, it'll be a matter of waitin' and seein' if the E1 does
indeed perform well in all it aims to do. Because I can help but to
have my own doubt in this regard, I'd be hesitant to be one of the
first to run out and buy one.

As regards the size/portability issue, I can certainly appreciate your
opinion on this matter, Steve, especially given the many compact and
micro-sized portables out there nowadays. For me, the E1's size and
lack of handle is no real issue: I regularly carry an SW8, antenna,
etc to remote areas to get in some quality listening in a less
noise-filled environment. For that matter, I frequently do the same
with the SW77, which I carry in one of those Pelican 1450 cases (nice
fit for the SW77 and accessories). For the E1, it's simply a matter of
getting a new foam insert for the case and picking & plucking for the
E1's size specifications. But then, that won't happen until I'm
assured of the quality and performance of this product.

And, sure, there's no need to give any thought to the various features
if, beneath it all, the radio itself simply isn't up to par. That's
why I'm really keen on seeing some mag reviews, as well as additional
user opinions posted on this receiver. I have to say, though, that
it's good to see a portable receiver being provided with such features
as passband offset and more than two bandwidth filters. I would like
to see more such performance-related features being added to portables.
For too long, it has been a tiresome reality that the only reason to
upgrade from one portable to the next has been that the new model has
an additional 100 or so memories to leave empty. So, in designing the
E2 or whatever successor model there may be (if any at all), it'd be
nice if the Eton folks would consider giving us a notch filter, as
well...

The $400 rebuilt ones from Universal were OK.

If somebody has money they want to "through away needlessly,Big deal,so
what! I whole heartingly APPROVE.It is their money and they are free to
spend their money in any way they wish.And I APPROVE.

Enough radios,you say? Honestly,I dont know how many radios I own,I
never counted them before.I have two closets crammed full of old radios
and several footlockers crammed full of old radios and radios scattered
all over in every room in my seven room house and that even includes my
bathroom.I think I own at least 200 old radios and most likely twice or
more old radios.And I am not going to go to the trouble of counting them
either.

But,will an E1 radio,without an external antenna pick up that radio
station in Monticello,Mississippi from over here on the West side of
Jackson,Mississippi in the daytime? Look it up in a Rand McNalley road
atlas.Monticello isn't that far from Jackson.

There are taxes on everything,especially the RIPP OFF sales taxes here
in Mississippi.I guess (only guessing) that we all do indirectly pay for
listening to radio whether we like it or not.Unless one whom is homeless
finds a battery powered radio in a dumpster somewhere.I APPROVE of
that.Some homeless folks are homeless because they want to be homeless
(maybe they know something we dont know) and weirdingly and

You just can't have too many radios.Throw the wife and kids out and dump
your girlfriends and collect more radios.
