It appears he's selling "backups" made from legal copies of the audio
books. If you already own the originals, it's legal for you to own a
backup.

If you don't own the originals, it's not legal for him to sell you a
backup so he doesn't want to know about it. (Call him Sgt. Schultz)

He may have actually convinced himself that what he is doing is legal,
or he is just another thief. Who knows. It is nopthing more than a
sham to hide the fact he is selling pirate copies. I don't think that
the owners of that product will agree...nor will their attorneys.
