Best (high end) Grundig Portable of all time?

I don't really need to know which is best, but I'd love to liven up the
group a little.

I've researched this question, just out of curiosity, and seem to
detect a vague consensus that the Satellit 700 was probably the best of
the line. I haven't used the Satellit 700, so I can't offer an opinion,
but I'd be curious to know whether others agree or not. The 700s are
always available on ebay, and I have found myself tempted at times.

Depends on whether you consider the 800 to be a portable.

I'd have to go with the 650. It sells for more used than it cost new.

I owned a Satellit 500 and loved it even though there was no selectable
sideband sync detector. When the Satellit 700 came out, I got one,
sent it back, and got a second one. I found the Satellit 500 to be
BETTER than the 700, even though the 700 had a selectable sideband sync
detector that, by the way, was flawed, but still worked somewhat. My
500 had much sharper bandwidth filters and much better sound. The wide
filter on the 500 was a bit wider than the 700, resulting in much more
treble sound, but still narrow enough to use most of the time. The
narrow bandwidth on the 500 was MUCH SHARPER than on the 700, yet still
produced reasonable sound without excess distortion. It really cut out
most adjacent station interference. The narrow bandwidth on the 700
was not narrow enough, and therefore, you needed to use the sync
detector. Problem is, the sync detector on the 700 is flawed, and
howled unless you turned the bass control all the way off so the sound
was nothing but treble sounding.

The biggest mistake I made was to sell my 500. It was great. The 700
didn't stay around very long before I got rid of it.

I own a big Grundig AM/FM/Shortwave wooden cabinet floor model radio
that has a built in Phonograph in the top of the radio. It says so right
there on the front speaker (pot metal sign thingy,Grundig) Grundig.A
couple of months ago,I looked at the two pamplets inside of an envelope
thingy that came with the radio, owners manual and an instruction manual
thingy. No where does the owners manual and the instruction say
Grundig, instead, they say,Telefunken. The date (as best as I could tell
that is printed inside of one of the manuals/pamplets thingy) of
manufacture of the radio was 1957.I bought the radio for $14.00
(fourteen dollars) about nine years ago at a Goodwill store that used to
be on Palmyra Street (winos and drunks and freaks kept breaking into
that downtown Jackson Goodwill store so much,Goodwill had to shut the
store down,I am serious!) here in
Jackson,Mississippi.(www.devilfinder.com Cool Buildings Of Jackson) Not
long after that at the same Goodwill store,I bought a big wooden cabinet
Telefunken AM/FM/ table model radio for $4.00. (four dollars) That radio
also has an envelope thingy with an owners manual/pamplet inside of the
rear panel of the radio.I couldn't find a date, but I believe the radio
dates back to the 1960's,perhaps late 1950's.Needless to say,my old
radios are not for sale or trade. So,why does my floor model Grundig
radio have Telefunken owners manual and instruction manual/pamplets
inside of the radio, did it used to be Telefunken/Grundig or
Grundig/Telefunken,whatever? Oviously, they are the proper and correct
manuals/pamplets for the radio, according to the pictures.

The only Grundig I own and have owned before is my Telefunken
AM/FM/Shortwave/Phonograph wooden cabinet floor model radio that is
masquerading as a Grundig radio,I think. It is sitting on my hardwood
floor near the corner by one of the front windows in my living room.I
have never owned any other Grundig radios before (nowdays, the name
Grundig means absolutely nothing to me at all, those modern day
Grundigs, that is) this one and in my opinion, when Grundig went to
China, they screwed up.Panasonic had some Panaonic radios made in
Germany.

I was actually thinking about "real" Grundigs, but sure, throw the 800
into the mix.

I notice that even dxing.dom gives the 700 more stars than the 650. The
700 is also one sharp-looking radio, for what that's worth.

Tora! Tora! Tora! movie is on tv now,but I have seen that movie so many
times before,I know it by heart,I can run it better than they can in my
brain box with my eyes closed.I am fixin to head on over to the Goodwill
thrift store now and see can I find me a Gruntdig satellit radio or any
kind of a good old radio for two or four dollars.Stay Tuned.

If you look at the ''Sold Archives'' you'll see the 650 going for $600
more than the 700.

The 650 is a piece of art. It has a motorized tracking preselector
and a 15 Watt audio power amp.

The price difference when used is interesting, although I guess the 650
was, for one reason or another, quite a bit more expensive when new as
well. The 650 doesn't look as big as the 800...is that correct? In
general, how is the build quality of the 650? I've heard from several
people that it has amazing sound.

It is similar in size but much heavier. Very old school.

My favorite was the TR-6001 (Satellit 210), closely followed by the Satellit
3400. These were the last of their radios that used the turret bandswitch on
the SW bands.
The 3400 improved upon earlier designs by using dual-gate MOSFETS for the RF
amplifier and the 1st mixer on the SW ranges. In addition to this, a 2MHz
crystal filter was used at the 1st I.F. on the SW ranges.
Another thing that was used was a Variometer that tracked along with the
main tuning capacitor on the LW/MW/SW1 ranges to provide additional RF
selectivity. Most of the coils are wound with Litz wire, which gives the
coils a very high Q.
Polypropolyne capacitors were used in the audio stages, giving this radio
quite a good sound.
When I opened up the Satellit 700, it looks like they got away from this
type of design, instead, using some sort of Philips? radio chip. Not a bad
thing........the AOR7030 radios have been using a Philips TDA1572 as their
2nd I.F. subsystem since the beginning.
