I think it's "Computer Aided Tuning", at least from context. Some radios have a serial port on the back, allowing you to hook up a computer so you can tune from the computer, and more obviously run software to do interesting things like scanning or going through really large numbers of specific frequencies (like really large memory for frequencies you want to remember). It might be a term specific to one brand of radio, but I'm not sure. Since I've never had a radio that has the ability, I've not paid much attention. Michael |

Would help if you gave context But here are some CAT CAT is an abbreviation for Computer-Aided Tomography Tomography Tomography is the technique of using X-rays or ultrasound waves to procure images of structures deep within the human body for diagnostic purposes. In modern medical imaging there are several techniques, such as the CAT scan (computerized axial tomography). CAT computer-aided test CATIS CATIS is an abbreviation for Common Applications and Tools Integration Services CATV CATV is an abbreviation for Common Antenna TeleVision; Community Antenna TeleVision CAT - Cathode Cat Whisker -- A whisker like probe used in Crystal Radio And of course CAT = Catalog as in Cat number -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- CL -- I doubt, therefore I might be ! |
If your tv set (assuming you have a tv set) has a vacuum tube for the
picture tube and if you are watching tv,you are looking at a Cathode Ray Tube. cuhulin |
I think it means "Computer Aided Transceiver" but, while the acronym is
commonly used, it's rare to find it expanded. The Icom CI-V protocol is a specification for a CAT interface. There is a good listing of CAT applications and interfaces at http://www.dk0tui.de/ham/ham_cat.html. Tom |
With a little more searching, voila!

And given that the original poster did not seem to be clueless and posting an off-topic question here, clearly the "CAT" relates to radio, and so many of the replies are irrelevant. Michael |
However -- in the Yaesu FT - 857 Manual, CAT is defined as Computer Aided
Transceiver This allows the Transceiver settings to be controlled by a computer, can be used with some logging programs. Requires software and an appropriate cable For Details - See Page 115 of the Yaseu FT-857 manual at URL: http://www.yaesu.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd...isArchived= 0 -- CL -- I doubt, therefore I might be ! Hmm what a mess - lets start over
CAT is Yaesu's Acronym for Computer Aided Transceiver. This allows the Transceiver settings to be controlled by a computer, can be used with some logging programs. Requires software and an appropriate cable. For details go to the Yaesu page for the FT-857 at URL: http://www.yaesu.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd...chived= 0--CL Now click on FILES Then click on FT-857 pdf (3.09 MB) On page 115, read all about CAT for this transceiver -- CL -- I doubt, therefore I might be ! |

I used to watch Jimmy Durante's once a week tv shows back in the
1950's/1960's.Songs and music and jokes,at the end of his once a week tv shows,he would be singing and playing that piano and he would always say,Good night Mrs.Calabash wherever you are! He was a great guy,Jimmy Durante was. What a Catastastrope! I watched a movie on tv a few days ago that had Jimmy Durante in the movie, but I don't remember the title of the movie. It was sort of a Military tome movie. cuhulin |
