I'm thinking about getting a YB 400 but also saw a listing for a
TECSUN PL-230 (GRUNDIG YB-550PE) and was wondering if you had any
commentary on the model and/or brand.

There's a review of the 550 by Judah Smith, at radiointel.com

I'd recommend a portable with SSB capability... Sony 7600GR, YB400 (it's called something else now)
or Degen DE1103.
If I was recommending one based on performance for amount of money spent I'd unhesitatingly tell you
to get the
DE1103.

Forget the YB400 (now renamed G4000) and the PL-230 (YB-550PE)
and look at the Sony 7600GR or the Kaito/Degen DE1103 if your short of
funds.

Lay off them Sangean radios,the front digital panel readouts on them go
bad in a couple of years or so.Or so I have read more than a few times
before.Lay off them Select-A-Tennas too,I once bought one from
www.ccrane.com and the antenna didn't work at all for me,even with
some of my old radios,it didn't work at all,I sent it back.I will never
do business with ccrane.com ever again.You can buy much better products
elsewhere and at much better prices too.
