Am looking for a world map I can view online that is helpful for SW
listener like me. Thanks.

Hello: I would like to have a hard copy world map for swl/ham. I am not
sure if the ARRL makes one.

In addition, what other information should be on a map for a swl/ham?

I have a very useful large world map, and on each country, their amateur
radio prefixes are listed. It's most helpful. I got it for free from a Yaesu
rep at a hamfest a couple of years ago. Perhaps check with a local amateur
radio dealer, if you have one near you, and ask if they know of any good
maps like this.

The Map Scroll
 

Thats right, I call it the map scroll. You may say "hey Steve, are you
crazy?"

No, I am not crazy! The idea came to me the other day when I was
cleaning out my radio junk closet, I came accross the Panasonic RF 2200.
This radio has something that you don't see that much. Considering a
late 70's/80's radio, the dial has a scolling feature which looks like
something I once saw on an much older radio.

In fact I wonder which was the first radio to come with this?

Ok, why couldn't they connect all of the diffent map a swl/ham may need,
and use that scrolling system. All you have to do is scoll over to the
next map page. Maybe it could be something you can keep on your desk.

It will save space and come in very handy.

Hey Dan: Well thats a good question. I am trying to figure out what
kind of map I should get. I like DXing, I subscribe to MT magazine. I
hate it after I pick up say an far away broadcast, get all excited
because of the distants, then to learn that it came through a near by relay.

If thats the case then at lease I would like to know more or less where
these relay are located as part of the hobby.

Dxing is a hobby to me. By having a hard copy map, I feel more
compleat. My radios & PC are in a small room here at home. And I have
two walls where I could place two maps.

My question is what are the the different kinds of maps I should have.

I know there are world maps with time zone, but what other information
should I look for in a map. World map that is!

Also, shouldn't I look for a map with latitudes? Please tell me which
maps I should get.

As for software, I do not care too much for it mainly because I would
have to keep my PC on most of my Dxing sessions. In fact I still use a
boatanchors, although I have an Icom R75.

I sort of have an old fashion approch to radio listening.

I agree dxatlas is one of the best and well worth it

but I don't think you can view it on-line as the original poster requested

In fact I believe it is a pay program -- maybe a free trial -- click on
REGISTER

Still lots of freebees out there viewable on-line
For example URL:

If you need prefixes to go with the maps -- lots available on the web
And they are alphabetical/numerical

Apparently my reply was swallowed in cyberspace. The ITU divides up
the world into regions CIRAF (I dont know what that means) but the
international telecommunications union assigns numbers to your
geographical region.'

When ILG and others do their SW charts they determine what (ITU CIRAF)
region the target of their signal is. I am 8 so anything targeted
towards me and I receive it means it's an EASY SIGNAL.

A CIRAF number in the 50's iirc is North africa. If I can receive a
signal ILG says is shooting to North Africa, that is a coup

I think the broadcaster is required to put the target region number
in their request to their national liscensing authority and that just
gets passed on to whoever (the ITU?) publishes the list that's the
input used by the various private database publishers.

There's a map in the FCC regs on international broadcasting.
(47 CFR 73 subpart F). (I suppose I could read the instructions,
but reading the FCC regs is more than my mind can deal with right now).
