DX-390 distorted audio
Does anyone have any suggestions to repair a DX-390 with extremely
distorted audio on all bands. Thanks, Jack |

Do you have the impression that the distortion is from the speaker
itself or an internal problem from the receiver itself? I really don't know anything about the 390, so I'm just thinking in very basic terms here. Natturally my first thought is a blown speaker, but you didn't say if the audio is distorted while listening through your headphones. If it is, guess it's not a speaker problem....sorry, I'm sounding like my brother who is notorious for pointing out the obvious. If not a speaker prob, then I'll then I'll just pray, cause I'm like Schultz on Hogan Hero's....I know nothing. Good luck on the fix. I'd be interested in what worked on your repairs/replacements. Take care. |

CJ & K,
Plug in an External Speaker or use a pair of Headphones. If the Sound is OK then it is a good possibility that the built-in Speaker is bad. jm2cw ~ RHF |

Yes, I have tried all the obvious I would look at the electrolytic capacitors in the audio stages. If there are not too many of them, I would just replace all of the electrolytics |

Looking for technical knowledge of component failure that would cause audio failure. Look around for cracked solder connections on the circuit boards or connections to the controls. Sometimes the quick and dirty method of using non-polar electrolytic capacitors in the single digit range is used to AC connect the audio between circuits. They can dry out and usually this also causes low volume along with the distortion. If an IC amp is used look at the decoupling capacitors for it. Those capacitors should be right next to the IC amp. -- Telamon Ventura, California |

To be clear, did it used to work well and then went sour? Or is a bad
DX-390 drop into your lap? Capt Jack wrote: Yes, I have tried all the obvious...different power suppies, headphones, etc. I have eliminated all the simple possible problems. Looking for technical knowledge of component failure that would cause audio failure. |
