Both houses of Congress have approved bills that will require the shutdown of analog TV transmitters. The House version specifies the end of 2008, the Senate version April of 2009. Assuming that the final bill will set a date between these two, and that the President will sign it (IMHO pretty much certain) that gives you an idea of how long analog TV sound radios will work. There are no TV sound radios for digital transmissions. (it is possible to make one but it would be a LOT more expensive than current analog sets and would probably have pretty poor battery life) I suppose if you really wanted to listen to TV sound around the house, the solution would be to buy a little FM radio transmitter (like the ones Ramsey Electronics sells, or the ones sold for playing satellite radio through the car), attach it to the cable box/satellite box/digital tuner, and use it to rebroadcast the TV sound on an unused FM frequency. You could then use any FM radio to listen. If she's wanting to listen while jogging/walking the dog/whatever away from the house, she's going to be SOL. -- Doug Smith W9WI Pleasant View (Nashville), TN EM66 http://www.w9wi.com |

Thanks in advance for your time.... NO, the Kaito does NOT receive TV channel sound. It is very unlikely that you will find a portable radio that picks up AM/FM/SW and the TV bands. There are AM/FM portables that include the VHF TV band, such as the CC Radio. |

One of these days I am going to have to get a hobby that gets me off my ass. grin, I took up bicycling four years ago. Now I've got to figure out a way to get a radio on the bikegrin... AFter the fact I saw that the ka1102 goes down to 70FM hz? which somebody said will likely pick up a few tv channels. TV channels 2-6 fall in the 54-88MHz spectrum. If the Kaito goes down to 70MHz it'll receive TV channels 4, 5, and 6. Again, until Congress shuts them downgrin. Now I need to dig out the Radio Shack turnstile crossed dipole .. and get it up out here on the northern plains. I thought I'd just stick if on come PCV mounted on the side of the garage...good ground of course...and then run a straight wire throught the trees...right? for AM and SW? I 'll read up some more, I'll read up... A turnstile is probably a FM antenna. Hook it to a decent FM receiver (say, your old stereo tuner?) & do some FM DXing... Yes, a straight wire -- as long as possible, as high in the air as possible, as far from obstructions as possible -- is a good choice for SW. Should work OK on AM too. -- Doug Smith W9WI Pleasant View (Nashville), TN EM66 http://www.w9wi.com |

Put a strap on that radio and wear it around your neck or over your
shoulder. That jouncing around bicycle might shake up that radio too much. cuhulin |
