Shortwave GPS transmitter

Hi

I'm curently working on a project for college, I am thinking of
building a portable shortwave transmitter that can send me gps
cordanates to show me where it is. I face certain problems as im not
sure what frequncy to use e.g groundwave or skywave. Aswell would it be
possible to send data over a HF i heard that there is much interferance
from it, is this possible? and how much power would you reckon i would
need to transmit a fair distance say no more than 100 miles(considering
this device has to be portable).
thanks in advance.

Why reinvent the wheel?
Hams have used AX25 and GPS, APRS, for years.
There are many possible uses.
For a start check out: http://au.geocities.com/vk3hjq/vk3hjq/aprs.htm

The 100 miles will be difficult to do dierectly.
But easy with the use of a "repeater".
