For One and All,
Comparing the Icom IC-R75 (R-75) to the Eton E1 Radio - - - Three Major Problems . . . http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ETON-E...o/message/1722 1. "D" CELL PORTABLE BATTERY POWER : So here is the Deal - The Eton E1 Radio is a 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Radio designed to be "Portable" and run off a Set of "D" Cell Batteries that are Carried within the Radio. I have gotten 80-100 Hours and more on One Set of "D" Cell Batteries when using the Eton E1 Radio. This is generally consider to be in the Very Good for a 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Radio. Now Look at the Icom IC-R75 Receiver's short comings : - NO - Built-in Battery Comparment. - Requires you build your own Battery Pack for 8 "D" Cells. - A Set of "D" Cell Batteries only last a 'very few' Hours. - Cost of a Daily Set of "D" Cell Batteries in the First Year of Ownership just about equals the Cost of the Radio. - Two things to Lug-Around : The Receiver and the Battery Pack; and 'both' are Heavy and Big. 2. "FM" BROADCAST BAND RECEPTION: The Eton E1 Radio has very good FM Broadcast Band Reception and the Built-in Speaker produces very good FM Quality Sound. Plus there is the Option of Connecting a Set of PC Type Self Powered Speakers and Enjoying really good FM Stereo Sound. FM Tuning and Memories are both very good features. The Icom IC-R75 Receiver has : - NO FM Broadcast Band Reception - The Built-in Speaker provides very poor Sound Quality. - There is NO Option of Connecting a Set of PC Type Self Powered Speakers and Enjoying really good FM Stereo Sound. - There is NO FM Tuning and Memory features. 3. XM SATELLITE RADIO : The Eton E1 Radio has very good XM Broadcast Band Reception and the Built-in Speaker produces very good XM Quality Sound. Plus there is the Option of Connecting a Set of PC Type Self Powered Speakers and Enjoying really good XM Stereo Sound. XM Tuning and Memories are both very good features. The Icom IC-R75 Receiver has : - NO XM Satellite Radio Broadcast Band Reception - The Built-in Speaker provides very poor Sound Quality. - There is NO Option of Connecting a Set of PC Type Self Powered Speakers and Enjoying really good XM Stereo Sound. - There is NO XM Tuning and Memory features. TBL - CONCLUSION : The Eton E1 Radio is a Very Good "Portable" AM/FM Shortwave Radio and runs along time on a Set of Batteries. It also has very good FM and XM Reception and Sound Quality. Now Lets Be Honest - The Icom IC-R75 is a Real Failure as a "Portable" AM/FM Shortwave Radio and only runs a few hours on a Set of Batteries. It totally lacks any FM and XM Reception and it's Sound Quality is poor. All are WELCOME to Join the Eton E1 AM/FM Shortwave Receiver with XM Satellite Radio Group on YAHOO ! I'm not used to being a big defender of the R75, but I must say I'm not
sure I understand the point of this comparison. The R75 was never meant to be a portable, was it? To my eye, it doesn't look like it was intended for portable operation. So, I don't see why it should this should count as a 'shortcoming'. I guess we could also say that the E1 'beats' the R8B in regard to portability, though if we're going to talk this way we should also point out that the little Grundig mini-world puts the E1 to shame when it comes to portability. Why does it matter that the R75 has no FM band and no XM? In particular, why do you say that these constitute shortcomings? In my opinion these things can only count in the R75's favor. And you don't mention the fact that the E1 lacks twin passband tuning, is mostly plastic, tends to be inaccurately aligned, and so on and so on. I guess I don't get it, really. The E1 is a good, if overpriced, portable receiver. Why isn't that enough? Do we have to be "loyal" to the E1 and does this "loyalty" require us to shortchange the R75 and all other receiver that are obviously a cut above the E1? This is the kind of attitude people took toward the Sat 800 and I hate to see it happen again, with the E1. Steve |

Steve ************************************************** ********************** i'm with you on this Steve. can't see where Icom meant the R75 to be portable. the E1 is way over priced. a few posters say cheap plastic and not much of a handle. i don't need the sat/XM whatever. the R75 is a proven performer at that price range, and so is the Sat800- which can be found at a much lower price. i have too many portables now. i don't need to buy the newest whiz-bang radio. if the E1 ever drops to maybe $300 or so, i may take a second look. to each his own... Yzordder - You Got It !
The Eton E1 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Radio is a Very Good "Portable" Radio : But many 'radio experts' try to compare it to a Desk Top Receiver like the Icom IC-R75 Receiver; simply because they are in the same price range. Saying that the Eton E1 Radio is lacking because it does not have : DSP, Twin BPT, Noise Blanker, Automatic Noise Filter, Optional Filters, ETC. The Reality Is - That "By Design" the Icom IC-R75 Receiver is a Desk Top Radio and NOT a 'portable' Radio; and should NOT be expected to run off a Set of "D" Cell Batteries. Yes -The Arguement was an Exercise in the Absurd and I Would Guess by all the Replies - It Worked ! For One and All, Comparing the Icom IC-R75 (R-75) to the Eton E1 Radio - - - Three Major Problems . . . http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ETON-E...o/message/1722 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why not compare apples to apples??? The R 75 was never designed to be a tag along with you type radio,, its a tabletop sw reciever. All the other points are totally moot in IMO. Who cares about FM? Music?? big deal. XM,, big deal you have to subscribe to get it. Why not compare it to a Drake R8, and you would come up with the same complaints. Sorry but this is really a redundant thread. Its about like comparing a wrench to a screwdriver, they do different jobs. Im glad "you" like it however. I think they are overpriced for what they are. J |
