I assume you want to buy new, not used. I also assume you do not want
to spend a whopping $400 or more on a mere portable.

In that case, you might consider the Icom R-75 or, for a little more,
the Palstar R30C. And if you're open to using a software defined
receiver, there's the Ten-Tec 320, which is said to be a tremendous
value for under $400.

If you're open to buying a used receiver, then you should get one of
the Drakes. They seem to bring the most bang for the buck on the used
market.

I disagree. If I had a spare $500 I'd definitely get the Eton.
