I think you will like it a lot. Both portables are good ones.

I think you will like the keypad layout and the traditional volume
control. After 1+ yrs of the 1103 (which I have come to appreciate
more), I still find the awkward volume control set up to take away from
the fun of using it.

I thought the lack of tuning knob might be hard to get used to on the
7600g(r) but it wasn't for me. There are two pairs of up/down keys
depending how much "territory" you want to move.

Both are quite good on sideband. There are times when the synch detect
of the 7600g(r) will make a difference on AM.

You've got yourself two good travel sized portables.

Forget about biased reviews such as RadioIgnoritel.

You can review your Sony long after your Degen has bit the dust because Sony
parts and service manuals are everywhere.

Just join the hundreds on the "7600GR" & "7600" at the Yahoo Groups.

if you go to www.radiointel.com and hit the review tabs....there is an
1103 review (which i need to update). also a comparison review (called
the Great Debate) between the 909, 7600g and 400PE. In 2006, I intend
to update that one as well to include the 1103 and 1102 which were not
out then. Lots of other radios to read about.

All the stuff at radiointel should satisfy your shortwave/radio
appetite for hours - maybe days!

Have a lucky new year-

Dear "Lucky,"

You're going to HATE it. I bought a Sony ICF-SW7600G in 1998. It was so
bad, I couldn't believe it, so in 2000, I bought another one, just to
make sure. Then when they came out with the ICF-SW7600GR in 2001, I
bought one. IT was so bad that, in 2002, I bought two more (just to
make sure, you understand). Then, recently, Amazon offered them for
$129.15 INCLUDING shipping so I ordered two MORE (naturally, to make
sure these new ones were just as bad as all my others).

These radios are so terrible that I use them every day and take one of
them with me on trips (just to make sure that they're as bad as I
believe!).

;-)

Seriously, may I suggest that, if and when finances allow, you consider
buying a Sony AN-LP1 antenna which will bring out the WORST in this
radio!

Best,

Joe (My wife says I'm crazy; do you think she's right?)

YOU telling me what to do and how long or short it should be. Sounds to me

Don't expect to much from it, Its certainly nowhere near as good as they say
it is, I doubt to be honest if you will notice much difference at all over
your degan 1103, except of course the Sony has sync detection (to a point)
its not very good. I sold my 7600gr on as i found the degan just as good to
use as a portable, and its smaller.

Wow

I'm actually shocked to hear this in a way. Not shocked because the 1003 is
excellent little portable. Kinda hard to get SSB audible if the signal is
weak on it, but other then that it's a fantastic little gem.

But I am shocked you sold your Sony.
I always heard such high acclaims about the 7600GR. So, I just received my
Amazon/Chase credit card and Amazon had it for $135.99 and free shipping
last night. Plus I get that $30 off first Amazon purchase so the radio cost
me a grand total of $105.99

I figured for that money, it had to be worth it when I heard people say it
was worth $165 that people once paid for it. Heck people are still paying
over $150 for it excluding shipping. I paid $65 for the Degen 1103 shipped
so for $40 bucks more, I thought I got a heck of a deal.

I'm sure that you will find it to be a fine performing radio that
will
allow you to hear much the same stations you found on the DE1103. I
was fortunate enough to own the original model from that long
running
series, the ICF2002 and that radio gave me many years of enjoyment.
Indeed the up/down tuning buttons finally died from overuse.

Most radios have at least one wart and the only shortcoming of the
7600
that comes to mind is tuning with up/down buttons. They are not as
effective as a simple tuning knob for the start/stop/back/forward
tuning many of us do. As with the single row frequency entry keys
of
the DE1103 one can learn to use tuning buttons on the 7600.

Gee, thanks John

You fed my hunger for more info. I love it.
The best of health and a superb New Year to you and the family.

Lucky

Same best wishes to you and yours Lucky. And please consider putting
your thoughts about both radios into a side-by-side comparison.

John

OK I will, I will

I did somewhat of a comparison in the Eton E1 review under the name of
"Luckydaze" if you care to read it. You have to scroll down to find it.
http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/5353

Lucky

Good review of the E1. I was surprised to learn that it didn't use a
ferrite rod antenna for MW. Does the whip give any directionality?

Thanks John,

I'm glad you liked it.

Yes, the whip does give it some degree of directionality depending on the
signal.
Yes, many flipped out when they read it had no ferrite rod built in. Many
didn't buy one due to that. But here in Florida I don't notice the loss. But
just set it horizontally all the way and it does it's job. I like the radio
plus the potential for getting XM sat radio one day.

Lucky

Thanks Lucky. The DE1103 does a pretty decent job of nulling
interfering stations and catching nighttime MW dx stations. Would the
E1 provide that level of MW performance?

Try it out on Sackville Canada relays, which is more or less the
poster child for synch detection being necessary.

6120 from 5-7am EST, or 6145 from 7-8pm EST (Radio Japan) being
one set to try.

You get huge distortion without synch detection, most of the time,
as the carrier and sidebands have wildly independent strengths.

Assuming you can hear them ; I guess they cover the eastern US,
where they're quite strong.

So it's a fine example of strong-signal selective fading.

FWIW the 6145 broadcast is coming in clear at 7:45PM EST on a Degen
DE1103 and no sideband is needed. Missed the 6120 broadcast so can't
report on that one.
