Enquiry about Sangean world radio receiver ATS 606

Hi,

I have a Sangean ATS 606 world radio receiver which was purchased in
1993. The AC-DC adaptor was spoilt years ago and it has been operating
on 3 AA batteries ever since. It operates on a power input of 250mA on
4.5V. Recently I purchased a univeral AC-DC adaptor with a maximum
current output of 500mA. However it can't seem to work with my radio.
The battery compartment gets hotter, but otherwise - nothing happens at
all.

I'm not sure whether my radio or the adaptor is faulty. Does anyone
have advice for me? I can't locate a Sangean service centre here in
Singapore and the electronics shop where I bought the radio from,
closed down many years ago.

Does that 'universal adapter' have interchangeable tips - if so
perhaps you have the polarity backward.

Are you referring to the polarity setting on the adaptor? There are 2
settings:
+ o -
- o +
I chose "+ o - " as it matches the polarity engraved near the dc input
jack on my radio receiver.

Use rechargeable NiMHs.

Have you tried emailing Sangean? I am not sure how well they handle technical questions but it is worth a try. Find their contact information at http://www.sangean.com/ .

Hi RHF.

First Question - Is your External AC-to-DC Power Adapter designed
for your standard AC Power Outlet {Input} in Singapore :
[ ] 220/240 VAC ? -or- [ ] 110/120 VAC ?
Problem - Trying to use a 110/120 VAC Adapter with a
220/240 VAC Source ?

Yes, I'm using a 240 VAC source which matches the AC power outlet in
Singapore.

Second Question - Right Adapter Plug SIze :
Make sure that you are using the Biggest Size "OD" Adapter
that 'fits' your Sangean ATS-606 Radio's 4.5 VDC Input Jack.
- Why - Sometimes the Radio's External DC Input Jack has
a built-in Mechancal Switch that 'disconnects' the Batteries
from the Radio when External DC Power is being used.

Yes, according to the radio manual, the radio has an inbuilt switch
which disconnects the batteries when external DC power is used. In
fact, when I connected the AC-DC adaptor to my radio which is operating
on batteries, the LCD display goes blank.

Third Question - Batteries Getting Hotter :
Then first of all - Unplug the External AC-to-DC Power Adapter
from the AC Power Input and the Radio.
Next - Remove the Batterys from the Radio
Then - Plug the External AC-to-DC Power Adapter into the
AC Power Input and the Radio.
Now - Turn-On the Radio and try listening to it again.
Does the Radio Work Now ?

I've done that but there's still nothing. :-(

Hi weatherall,

I have emailed Sangean Taiwan using the email address on its website,
but have not received a reply. According to the website, Sangean Taiwan
handles all customer service external to US and Europe.

Guess I'll try US's Sangean instead. Thanks for your recommendation.

I used to have a similar problem with my Kaide world band radio. Once I
connected the AC adaptor plug to it, it stopped working even when
there was battery inside. LCD display went blank, too.

Turned out the cause of the problem was that the plug didn't perfectly
fit the socket on the radio although it appeared to fit. I twisted the
plug and pull it out a bit. The radio then worked intermittently. It
therefore was a problem of poor contact.

I then used another plug that finally proved to fit perfectly. No more
problem.

I tested the AC-DC adaptor on a handheld Casio TV. It didn't work
either, though its plug fitted perfected and it was tuned to the
correct voltage. Guess the adaptor's faulty??

GT,

When All IS Said and Done . . .

If the Radio itself works A-OK on Batteries :
Then try a Different AC-to-DC Adapter and a new Plug.

yes it is that simple - iane ~ RHF
