I didn't mean to put you off on the R75.
I'm not saying go buy this one because I don't know the specifics on it but at Universal web site. Here is a Demo unit http://www.universal-radio.com/alert.html D931 *ICOM R- 75 DEMO COMM GC DIG 0.3-60MHZ ORIGINAL 559.95 NEW ORIGINAL WARRANTY A new R75 from them is only $10 more with a free DSP module. http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/commrxvr/0175.html and for new go here to see current tabletop radios. http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/commrxvr.html I can recommend a AOR 7030+, Drake R8B and a Ten-Tec RX-340 because I own them and they are great SW broadcast listening radios but they are much more expensive than the R75. The Drake R8B is discontinued now so you will have to buy it used. Universal doesn't have any used ones right now. The Yaesu FRG-100B and the Palstar are more in the R75 price range. If I was you I would go read some reviews on the web. http://www.radiointel.com/reviews.htm http://www.dxing.com/rx/rxindex.htm http://www2.rnw.nl/rnw/en/features/m...ceivers/rx_sor t1.html In article , "Lisa Simpson" wrote: Based on your comments, now I am less sure I want the R75. In article , "Lisa Simpson" wrote: ok, ya ready for a dumb question? : } Does anyone have a used Icom R75 they're looking to sell? As a novice listener I advise you to look for a different radio. The controls are not intuitive and it would probably take me a while of operating that radio to get the most from it. If you like tweaking the radio then don't let this stop you. Some people like to play with the controls and some don't. If you spend more time listening to utility/ham/SSB than SW broadcast then again you might consider the R75 but on the other hand if your interests go the other way then consider another radio with better sync, AGC and audio characteristics. Importantly if you decide to get the R75 make sure it has all the latest of the "mods" for the AGC, sync and audio. These "mods" either fix or improve problems with that radios performance. Also this radio has an optional DSP module. I would want that in the radio. If it has all this stuff and is in good alignment and physical shape and your listening interests support it then consider it. One more thing, the speaker is small and poor sounding so expect to use headphones or an inexpensive external bookshelf speaker with it. Please post to the news group about what you get and how it works out for you. Any table top radio will be a big step up from portable performance with a outside antenna. Good luck with your purchase and good listening to you. -- Telamon Ventura, California -- Telamon Ventura, California |
