I am soliciting opinions, experience, etc on the Radio Shack DX-394; I just
"won" one on ebay for ~150$, and am wondering what to expect . . .

My opinion is you should have asked the question before bidding,
though it's not like I've never purchased something without fully
researching in advance. So, Pot ........ meet Kettle and it's time to
help you move forward.

Not having any direct experience with the radio I cannot offer any
firsthand observations. There are folks who swear by this radio; they
have modified it though and you may wish to view those and see which
of them seem important and are within your technical reach to perform.
You can find reviews on e-ham, not that e-ham is the ultimate source
of radio wisdom but it will give you an overall idea of what you will
soon have. The overall opinion seems to be 'okay for the cost' -
check out the reviews he http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/2108
You can pre-read the manual he
http://esrman20.tripod.com/dx394/
You will find mods here (a couple of the folks listed on this page
make appearances here when a good thread gets going, you may end up
hearing from them):
http://www.monitor.co.uk/radio-mods/dx-394/dx-394.htm

Hope this helps get you started, and of course I must add the
obligatory line........."make sure your antenna is as good as your
housing situation allows."

You originally were asking about the R-75 and the NRD-525, I believe.
I have both of those PLUS a modded DX-394. The 394 is nowhere near being in
the same league as the other 2...

Jim's right - different leagues in both price and performance. But, like
different levels of sports leagues, you can have a lot of fun in the
juniors. If your DX-394 is in good shape and alignment, it will do very well
for you.

The DX-394 can be a respectable receiver if you do some of the mod's
that are recommmended by those in the know. Here are some links-

Lisa,

Does your DX-394 have the letter 'B' sticker on the back like the
following picture? It's the better version of the 394.

The 'B' model has better SSB performance along with some other
improvements. Where did you get the DX-394?

I'm surprised the previous owner took the time to install the shielding.
I don't recall that being a recommended mod' for the DX-394. Does it
still have the original label on the rear which gives the model and
serial number? The ferrite rod antenna is mounted on the top circuit
board inside the case. This is for MW (AM) reception. The shielding must
have reduced or even eliminated the effectiveness of this antenna. How
is reception on the AM band (525-1615)?

Shielding is a recommended mod to reduce interference from VDT's and other
nearby equipment. The LW/MW ferrite rod is sensitive mainly to the magnetic
field so shielding that is effective on the electric field and is not
ferro-magnetic has little effect on the LW/MW sensitivity but is effective
at SW. If you want the best results on LW/MW, it is advisable to replace the
ferrite rod antenna with shielded or toroidal transformers, shield the
receiver for both electric and magnetic fields, and use a directional
outdoor antenna with shielded transmission line. Leaving the internal
antenna in place degrades the directivity of the outside antenna and picks
up more local interference. This would be true for any radio with a built-in
antenna, not just the DX-394.

The shielding has eliminated the possibility of connecting the top-mounted,
screw-in type antenna, so I have to wire up an external antenna; I have a
wiring company coming in to do so in a couple weeks. Don't know how it
performs yet due to no antenna, but at least it powers up!
