The R-390A is without a doubt the best SWL receiver I've ever had for pulling in difficult signals. It costs a fortune to operate one, however. How does the sensitivity of the R-390A above 15-Mhz compare with modern receivers? During the killer 1990 solar max I was getting 26 MHz Auxilliary Broadcast links from the upper Midwest reliably in Houston all day long. I also remember listening to Iceland on 21 Mhz every Saturday, coming in like a local. A tube radio can be extremely quiet. |

Best: Ten-Tec RX-340 Others: ICOM IC-R8500 WinRadio G303i (early adopter) Collins R-392 Now, which I *prefer* to use depends on exactly what I'm doing. The '8500s are within easy reach of my computer, so if I hear about an event going on, they're a quick setup. With the exception of poor dynamic range and poor rejection, the '303i is a fun radio with surprisingly good performance and audio. If it's hard to pick up or being interfered with, the TT is the way to go. The '392 is an amazing machine but gets exercised least. -- Eric F. If I ever make sense of it, I'll take a few shots. But I'll tell you now, that Maghakian's is far more impressive. |
