Why is 'Talk Radio' So Conservative?

If NMPR is so successful, why is it that they need government funding for 100% of their operation? Contrast that to conservative talk radio, which barely has enough time to fit in all the interested advertisers. NPR is not 100% funded by payments from the government - the proportion of government payments is a very small portion of their budget. NPR is successful in the sense that it has a large audience because it offers a wide range of programming that it's listeners want to hear. And they are way more objective than an ad-supported company. My Bircher Dad loved All Things Considered and Morning Edition. He was a pretty fart smeller. That's a strange thing to say about your dad... All the newscasters and program moderators I've heard carry their own biases and beliefs into their presentations. We just have to realize that news and information no matter the source has been filtered in some way. |

If satellite radio takes off and one standard emerges then I suspect that more quality programming will shift to that medium, but how much is a guess. I think it will take a merger of the two satellite radio providers before that will happen. That will probably never happen. The Duopoly is mandated by the FCC. More likely is a single receiver that seamlessly receives both providers. Also mandated by the dreaded FCC. I suspect that in the battle for listeners coming up that one of them will dominate and ultimately overpower the other. There isn't a difference in technical quality between XM and Sirius that there was between AM and FM to force a transition. The winner if there is one will be decided by the audience share gotten by having the right mix of programming. And some of that programming is proving to be quite expensive, so the investors are going to want to see a profit sometime soon. I think it will be a bruising fight, but I may be way off base too. But it could also end up that XM and Sirius are just two more buttons on a signal processor right along side AM, FM, Ipod, CD and maybe digital FM. It will be interesting. |

Why is 'NPR' So Conservative?

I heard (somewhere) a very convincing program which was demonstrating that NPR isn't really liberal, that if liberal, it is to the extreme right of that category. Not that it necessarily started out that way. I believe the program was based on an analysis of the amount of time given right or near right spokesmen versus the amount of time (and number) of left/liberal commentary. The left has gone right, and the true left is off the mainstream map. It's true that NPR, like much of the media, is bending over (backwards?...nah...just bending over...) to appear ''fair and balanced''. This is based on the flawed premise that there's 2 sides to the truth. Further proof that we are screwed. I believe in the World Service, but even they fall prey to Bush World paranoia. |
