Hi,

I was wondering if folk could point out any good resources about
antennas for beginners. The amount of information out there is a little
daunting.

I listen to SW and SSB mostly on a couple of portables and just got a
table top (souped-up DX-394) that I am enjoying playing with. I am a
homeowner and my "shack" is in a second-floor room, with an insulated
thin wire running out the window of an attic room connected to the room
I listen in, but not suspended, just hanging out the window. I have
about 1/3 acre of back yard with some small trees and bushes. Trying to
figure out what is possible with this location. I get some buzzing
interference, possibly from my heating system (?) when the heat starts,
and there is a tiny airport a mile or so away, too.

Thanks!

I hope this won't inundate you with too much info, but this page has so many
good links related to antennas that I think you will find something here
that suits your needs:

There's also Joe Carr's Receiving Antenna Handbook
available. It's a good reference for the newbie, since
(unlike the Practical Antenna Handbook) it doesn't
overwhelm you with radio theory.

My 2 cents:
in the mentioned page you have : http://www.greertech.com/hfloop/mymagloop.html

I've tried this one (very easy and cheap to build). It works ok !!! Only
downside, if you are listening to several bands, the you must have several
antennas (one per band).

Else, I will try this one as soon as I have some time to install it (found in
the eGroup : http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/Shortwave-SWL-Antenna, you can go
there as well for info) :

Snip

He tells you not to ground the end of the coax. It's not a loop antenna
if you don't.
