After a couple more days, some more thoughts:
1. Twiddling the BFO thumbwheels is a real PITA. Realistically I'll only have to do this changing from CW to RTTY etc. but still it's a pain. 2. ISB (independent sideband) split left-right in stereo or on headphones is the coolest thing since sliced bread. I've never had this before! 3. Synthesizer noise is not noticable when sitting, but when tuning through a 10kHz boundary there's this annoying click/thump that occurs. It's better than radios which "chuff" while tuning, but it is annoying. (Realize I come from a world of non-digital tuning and I've been annoyed by all synth-based tuners in one way or another.) 4. 3.2 and 6kHz filters still sound incredibly sharp - WOW! I did some side-by-side test comparison with my Ten-Tec Triton on weak-signal CW stuff and while the 0.3 and 1kHz filters are quite acceptable, I think I prefer the Ten-Tec filtering (even though it's not as brick-wall steep). Or maybe it's that good old-fashioned analog knob while tuning on the Ten-Tec. I will have to do more than a couple hours of CW listening to sort this out - I've grown really accustomed to the sound of the Ten-Tec filters maybe, or maybe it's just that the Ten-Tec was built to excel at CW. 5. The hang on the AGC in slow mode seems way too long if I'm tuning around. I know that's how it's supposed to be, but I'm not used to it yet. With my other radios I can set the AGC hang time to be long and don't really notice it while tuning around. Maybe it's a combination of hang time and the tuning rates (again I'm not used to this digital tuning with different step rates concept) Tim. |

I doubt it's the filters themselves as much as the lack of leakage around them. Naw, I bet that 300 KHz filter lets him hear the whole world... at once! ![]() -- If John McCain gets the 2008 Republican Presidential nomination, my vote for President will be a write-in for Jiang Zemin. |
