$100 Radio ?
Hi, I havent had a shortwave in probably 25 years, and am thinking about getting another one. The one I had back in the day was a Rhapsody, one of those larger tabletop models with the swivel "directional" antenna on top of it. Probably $50 or so back in the early 1980's. It did, as far as I know, a decent job. I enjoyed listening to the propaganda from the old Soviet Union. I see radios now ranging from $10 to whatever you care to spend. It looks like most of the folks in here have high end radios, but Im planning on staying under $100.00 as that should cover a radio that will provide some "casual" listening. That, and funds are limited, and I do like to have several interests covered and not all my money tied up in one activity. I do read reviews and such on the net, but I always prefer to hear personal experiences from actual users. About the only features Id require on a cheap radio is an external antenna jack (I think many el-cheapos lack this), and a digital tuner, as Ive always found sliderules to be inaccurate on most any kind of radio. Any recs or warnings? Thanks, Nathan |

While I don't have any experience with this unit, that is exactly what I was going to say. I've been watching these on eBay, cheapest place to buy one, just over $60... |

As buzzygirl said, the Degen DE1103 is probably the best package of radio features for the money. Just search on Ebay for DE1103 (don't include the name Degen) and you will find a couple of reliable sellers. I got mine from Liypn and had excellent service. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZliypnQQhtZ-1 And another reliable seller is tquchina. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZtquchinaQQhtZ-1 Finally, this website has a lot of information on the newer portables including some extensive reviews. There is a review of the DE1103. http://www.radiointel.com/ If you decide to go with a different radio, just be sure it includes digital tuning. Good luck, and be sure to post your final choice. |

Nathan,
Save a few extra bucks, or splurge for a Sony ICF-SW7600GR. It is on sale for $129 at Etronics.com. It has the best performance/price value currently available. It includes a Sync Detector which is unavailable on ANY radio even remotely near its price class. You will not be sorry that you splurged. "Nathan Bates" wrote in message ... Many Thanks to the group for all the good advice. Im researching it all closely on the net, but I imagine it will end up being the Kaito 1103 as Id like to get the most frequency coverage for the money. It also has the sideband feature, which I know nothing abut apart from CB radio, but am learning about it. I like to pick up all the stations I can. I even once built a rig using the yoke from the back of an old TV picture tube attached to a cheap audio amplifier (like a "super ear" or some such) and could pick up some kind of beacon loud and clear. Interesting as it cost next to nothing to make. I like the Kaito, but will also probably pick up an old used heavy rig, something like an old Realistic SW-100 just for nostalgia :o) Again, many thanks! Nathan |

Keep in mind that you will be stuck with that cheap radio for a long time as
they have Zero resale value. "Nathan Bates" wrote in message ... Many Thanks to the group for all the good advice. Nothing wrong at all with finding old rigs (actually,I prefer the old
rigs) at thrift stores, junk shops, yard sales, fleamarkets, wherever, whatever, for only a few dollars,,, pocket change.Look,if you spend over $140.00 for a portable radio or over $400.00 dollars for a table model radio in the usual stores,(forget ebay) you spent too much money.Go for the cheap sales areas. cuhulin |

Kaitos and Degens,,, good chance they might short out and burn your

No biggie on being stuck with a cheap radio, as my father-in-law and I like
to dabble with radios. He has a little trading post in a neighboring town. We buy, sell, trade, mostly CB radios, and the occasional scanner. We dont run across many shortwave sets. He has an OLD Robyn CB rig right now, along with an old Regency. Tube types, and they work good. Somebody will come along and want them eventually. But if we cant sell, we usually manage to trade for something else we want :o) Nathan "SeeingEyeDog" wrote in message ... I've done some research online about these units, I've read of a few problems, but never once have I read anything about a unit shorting out, let alone causing a fire.. You really shouldn't spread false information like you do, some day it's going to come back and bite you in the ass! |

Even some American brand names of some products sometimes burn some
houses down.I think it was a certain American brand name of electric coffee makers that a number of them did catch fire and there was that Daimler/Chrysler hybrid car on recharging the batteries in a certain garage in Florida that did burn most of that house down.(Look em up) One thing is for sure,y'all will never catch me buying a Kaito or Degen "radio" cuhulin |
