Bulgarian SW Station in Sofia

As your flight comes in for a landing in Sofia, Bulgaria you fly over
a shortwave transmitter site. It's a few miles out of town on a high
piece of ground along a two lane road. Several huge towers.
I am wondering what station it is, and whether it is active. A native
Bulgarian (my wife's father, actually) told me it was "A transmitter
from the Communist days that covered up other signals."
Is this Radio Bulgaria? All I have managed to find was a posting on
this group from a few months ago that said a Radio Bulgaria
transmitter site was located in Plovdiv, a couple hours from Sofia.

Might have been one of their jamming sites, just as your father-in-law said.

So how can I find out?
I guess I could ask wife to drive up and knock on the door on her next
visit!

Might wish to give it a try, or get in touch with a few of the locals who might
know a bit more.

"Jamming in Bulgaria: In 1951-1988 there was a network of local jamming stations,
covering all the major cities, as well as several sky wave jamming radio centers,
beamed at the USSR, Poland and Czechoslovakia".

From: http://www.radiojamming.puslapiai.lt/article_en.htm

Might find out more by doing a Google on "Radio Jamming".

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they are jamming sites. On several
occasions I made the drive between Sofia and Blagoevgrad and passed
sites that I later learned were used for jamming.
