I'm not so sure how well the 505 will take a good
external antenna. I know the 398 and the old 803a
did well, but the 505 I have little experience in.

If he's looking for something in the 300-400 dollar
budget, there's a plethora of used radios that fit
in that range. All depends on his listening habits.

Ive got an length of wire with two crocodile clips at each end.Im
thinking of soldering a jack on one end.

After much experimentation, I found that the jack works best at the
RADIO end of the wire.

Jack it up and drive a Watkins Johnson Radio under it.

well duh i dont like the idea of clipping the wire on the antenna, now
my antenna is bent :(.
