I'm thinking of getting a new inexpensive SW radio. The Eton E-10 looks
acceptable and is available locally. Any horror stories out there?
Reviews seem OK.

How about Sangean? I don't know what model equates with the E-10.

The Eton E10 iss a rebranded Tecsun PL-550. Have you seen this review:
http://www.radiointel.com/review-pl550.htm

It would be helpful to know what you consider the positives and negatives are for this radio. However, you should consider this radio alongside other radios in this price range:

Grundig G4000A (aka YB400 PE) (US$100-150)
Kaito 1102, 1103 (US$70-100)
Eton E5, Sony ICF SW7600GR (US$120-150)

Purchasing via mailorder will allow you many more options.

Hal,

I would recommend the Sony ICF SW7600GR
as the better of the smaller portable AM / FM
Shortwave Radios especially for the AM-SYNC
Function. Get the Sony AN-LP1 Shortwave
Loop Antenna an you have a great Travel Radio
for Shortwave Listening (SWL)

just my two cents worth - jm2cw ~ RHF

I bought the E-10 when it first came out but returned a week
later...Although it had good sound and the sensitivity was ok, it was
single conversion that made me return it...It had a IF shift button
that was suppose to help get rid of images, but it was a useless
feature that really didn't help much...
I picked up the 1103 instead and it will outperform the E-10 in just
about everyway...

Dear Hal,

Consider investigating/purchasing a Sony ICF-SW7600GR, a much better
radio than the Eton E-10. The Sony is a dual-conversion receiver and
features a synchronous detection circuit. Both of these features
greatly improve the listening experience. The Sony's construction
quality is first-rate. You probably would have to buy it mail-order
(web or telephone), but there are many reputable dealers (AES,
Universal, Amazon, J&R Music World, and others) from whom you can
purchase it.

I have been disappointed with ALL THREE of the Sangean radios I
own(ed). They have/had mediocre construction quality and their
"computers" all failed early.

Best,

Joe
